Atira Development Society builds, operates and maintains housing to meet the need for safe, appropriate and
affordable rental housing with a focus on housing for women and on mixed-income communities.
Located at 41 East Hastings Street, Olivia Skye is a newer mixed-income rental building. We are hiring a
Community Animator to work full-time Mondays through Fridays, with the ability and flexibility to work some
evenings and weekends. This role entails a range of responsibilities from engaging in active listening and
fostering positive interpersonal relationships with and between tenants, to making resource referrals, setting up
meetings, activities and events in and around the building, to coordinating and supporting tenant clubs and
committees, to working with the external community to ensure the tenants at Olivia Skye are welcomed and active
participants in the neighbourhood, and that the neighbourhood is actively engaged in supporting Olivia Skye and
its tenants. The Community Animator will also be part of the In-Between Spaces Project, a project aimed at
identifying and animating the Downtown Eastside’s In-between (third) spaces. At ADS we encourage
creativity and leadership and make space for staff to develop and implement programming in collaboration with
tenants, with their co-workers and with community partners.
You are outgoing and love people. You are cheerful, resourceful and committed to excellent customer service.
You are a self-starter who is excited about opportunities to organize and run meetings, activities and events
efficiently and to innovate and work with smart and creative people every day. You love gardening and are thrilled
that part of your job will be coordinating participation and working in the small but mighty community garden. You
embrace Atira’s mission, vision, values and philosophy. You have a well-developed understanding of and
commitment to anti-oppression work and intersectionality. You have experience as a community animator
combined with relevant education and or skill-based training. Lived expertise is an asset, as is living in the
community in which you work. Atira strives to hire staff who reflect the people we serve.
You question actions inconsistent with Atira’s values and you treat everyone with fairness and respect
independent of their status or disagreement with you. You expect great things from yourself and your co-workers.
You inspire others with your passion for your work and your eagerness for excellence. You contribute to an
environment where people can flourish and grow and you seek what is best for everyone, rather than what’s best
for you or your team. You challenge the status quo to improve quality and sustainability and you take smart risks
and make tough decisions without agonizing.
You Also Have:
You show initiative, good judgement, are decisive and can solve problems. You know how to prioritize and meet
deadlines in a dynamic environment. You enjoy facilitating meetings/events, and have a proven ability to develop
and maintain rapport with people, groups and organizations. You roll up your sleeves and get the work done, and
ensure people are supported. You have the physical ability to perform the duties of this position.
You are a newly graduated Planning student and or have a year of relevant experience / transferrable skills. You
are able to secure valid First Aid and Food Safe certificates and a Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate. If
you have any of these already, it puts your resume at the top of the pile. You must clear a criminal records review.
