Trauma Counsellor, part-time contract position

30 hours – Flexible schedule required, days and evenings required

The Organization

The Organization Street Haven is a multi-site and multi-service feminist organization that supports women seeking assistance within its fully interconnected services. Women who may be experiencing or at risk of homelessness, substance dependency, mental health, trauma, poverty and food insecurity who desire enhanced quality of life and well-being will find an inclusive “safe haven” in which to rebuild their lives. The organization oversees a 27 bed Emergency Shelter, a 47 Bed Hotel Program, 32 Supportive Housing Units, Academic Upgrading and Pre-Employment Services and Addiction Services including a three-month 6-bed In-Residence Treatment Service and Community Outreach across Toronto. Street Haven is guided by the principles of Housing First and Harm Reduction, with all policies, procedures and service delivery demonstrating a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity. Street Haven has supported marginalized women for over 55 years

 

Addiction Services

Addiction Services is comprised of a 90 day in-residence treatment program as well as a community outreach program for women experiencing substance dependency

 

Job Summary  

The Addiction Services programs at Street Haven provide individual and group counselling to women with substance use concerns. This advance practice position includes individual & group counselling, consultation, and capacity building and will provide a range of supports that include, trauma specific groups, workshops and long term individual work. The service is delivered within a culturally competent framework that includes advanced expertise in substance use, trauma—informed

The position provides counselling services and psychotherapy to individuals. Additionally, facilitates groups for women involved in pre and post treatment programs

 

Key Contributions

  • Provide a variety of clinical assessments to meet the needs of women with substance use, and presenting concurrent concerns
  • Maintain timely documentation and progress reports for client support, consultation and collaborative health care interventions
  • Develop and implement a therapeutic relationship to address factors contributing to substance use and trauma
  • Provide clinical individual/group counselling
  • Provide referrals for supporting care and follow-up with institutions to promote seamless integrated care
  • Identify and build linkages with agencies, other supporting organizations and social service systems in the area to promote consistent and sustainable interventions
  • Identify and make accessible a variety of supports including, housing, financial aid, family support, crisis intervention/prevention/support, advocacy for women in need

 

Key Competencies

  • Master’s level degree in Social Work or related field
  • 5 years of experience in the field of substance use, mental health and trauma-informed practice
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Working knowledge of trauma-informed practice, women centred principles and best practices for women and substance use
  • Demonstrated clinical skills including individual and group, brief and long-term counseling, trauma-informed therapy
  • Ability to prepare and present information in both formal and informal settings.
  • Efficient knowledge of Microsoft Office; including Word and Outlook and DATIS Catalyst systems.
