The BC SPCA Surrey Education and Adoption Centre is currently looking for an enthusiastic and highly organized individual to take on the temporary 6-month role of Assistant Manager. The Centre provides education and support to the community to enhance animal welfare and encourage adoption. The Centre is a fast-paced environment perfect for an individual with a passion for both animal welfare and community building. You will make a direct impact on the lives of both animals and members of the community by assisting with the development, delivery and management of innovative education, adoption and retail services.

The Assistant Manager is responsible for the management of volunteer services and all aspects of the involvement of volunteers at the Centre. This position also contributes to the development of volunteer resources in the BC SPCA.  Additional responsibilities of this role include assisting with community outreach, marketing, retail sales, fundraising, education development and the management of the welfare of adoptable animals at the Centre as well as Centre administrative duties and act as the Manager in his/her absence.

You have a successful track record of managing people and the ability to motivate and inspire a core group of volunteers. You have demonstrated an outstanding ability to create strong working relations with the community and our stakeholders. You will use those skills to maintain our Centre, lead our local fundraising efforts and create great working relationships with staff, volunteers and your community liaisons as a whole.

To succeed in this role you have:

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 3 years in a managerial / supervisory role
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ License
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Fundraising, volunteer management and media experience a must
  • Knowledge of volunteerism and volunteer management practices
  • Leadership and conflict management skills
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a core group of volunteers
  • Ability to connect with diverse types of organizations: schools, businesses, government, faith organizations, etc.
  • Must have genuine compassion for animals and previous animal care training or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and work with minimal supervision
  • Must have a genuine compassion for animals and sound knowledge of the Five Freedoms and related animal welfare standards
  • Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies, programs and protocols
  • Outstanding communication skills and ability to work with internal and external stakeholders at all levels in a positive manner
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills
  • Previous experience working within an animal shelter, fundraising, volunteer management and media experience would be an asset
  • Strong computer skills – Windows, MS Office incl. PowerPoint, Excel and Skype
  • experience working in a non-profit organization considered an asset
