The Nature Trust is seeking a CEO to lead and manage the organization including supporting the Board of Directors, members, volunteers, and partners across the province of New Brunswick.

The CEO of the Nature Trust is charged with leading and working with: a team of twenty-plus staff; a fifteen-member board of directors; donors; landowners; hundreds of volunteers; federal, provincial and municipal levels of government; First Nations peoples; environmental NGOs; and many other stakeholders to protect New Brunswick’s natural heritage and biodiversity.

The CEO reports to and collaborates with the Board of Directors to develop the Nature Trust’s strategic objectives. Staff also play a significant role in the strategic plan process.  The CEO then implements the goals of the resulting Strategic Plan and manages the operations of the organization. The CEO provides leadership to staff, engages with stakeholders, and oversees all efforts that support the Nature Trust’s pillars of Conserve, Steward and Engage. The CEO is responsible to the Board to determine and implement all Nature Trust activities; to act as a liaison between Board and staff; to assess external and internal risks and address any issues that impact the organization; and to ensure the Nature Trust remains financially sound. The CEO and Board President are the spokespersons for the Nature Trust, speaking to issues and topics of concern and relevance to conservation within New Brunswick.

The CEO position offers a unique leadership opportunity as there is currently an unprecedented movement to conserve private land in New Brunswick. Canadians are voicing their support for land conservation, the protection of biodiversity and nature-based climate solutions. There is significant momentum towards land conservation with the Government of Canada committed to protecting 25% of Canada by 2025 and 30% by 2030. In the face of continued challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss, the Nature Trust is taking a leading role in advocacy for the conservation of New Brunswick’s natural heritage and creating a legacy of protected ecosystems for future generations.

Fluency in English is a requirement for this position. Fluency in French is an asset.

About the Nature Trust of New Brunswick

Established in 1987, the Nature Trust is a grassroots, charitable land conservation organization that is responsible for conserving over 9,000 acres (3,600 hectares) of private land in more than 60 beautiful and diverse nature preserves throughout the province.

Our mission is to conserve areas in New Brunswick that are ecologically significant; to establish nature preserves that remain protected forever; to steward the preserves through a network of volunteers and supporters; and to engage with the public on the importance of land conservation, New Brunswick’s natural heritage, biodiversity, and species at risk.

New Brunswick is a bountiful province, with stunning landscapes and varied ecosystems of forest, coastline, and waterways. The organization protects unique natural areas in New Brunswick: spectacular spaces of pristine, scenic beauty, including many that shelter rare, endangered species of flora and fauna. We partner with individuals, landowners, community groups, non-profit organizations, Indigenous groups, businesses, and government departments at all levels to protect New Brunswick’s natural spaces. We establish nature preserves through land donations, land purchases, conservation easement agreements, other legal interests in land, and manage them in perpetuity.

We acquire conservation lands by working with our communities, members and volunteers to ensure that the natural heritage of New Brunswick is protected forever. Anyone can become a member of the Nature Trust by making a donation in person or online. In 2019, the Nature Trust established Our Conserve Y(our) NB: Protect the Places You Love campaign with a goal of raising $10 million to increase the amount of land we protect to 15,000 acres by 2030. This campaign is focused on protecting the essential habitats important to combating climate change, increasing wildlife habitat, and protecting the natural heritage of our province.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate:

  • Is an exemplary communicator and people leader;
  • Is a visionary changemaker who sees the big picture and brings previous experience leading strategy, operations and finance, and teams comprised of both staff and a Board of Directors;
  • Is a strategic thinker who can use data, insights, and connections to advocate for land conservation;
  • Has a strong understanding and track record in philanthropy, fundraising, and fund development;
  • Is a strong relationship builder who engages and collaborates with multi-sector partners on environmental and conservation issues in pursuit of the Nature Trust strategic objectives; and
  • Has experience in government relations, including Indigenous engagement.

CEO Qualifications

Education

Post-secondary education or related experience in Business and Natural Resource Management or equivalent experience (Business Administration, Leadership, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Governance, Law).

Experience

  • Extensive experience as a CEO, Executive Director, or other senior management position with strong visioning, strategic and creative thinking requirements;
  • Experience reporting to a volunteer Board of Directors;
  • Experience with strategic planning, financial management and fund development, including budget development and management;
  • Experience in fundraising within a non-profit setting;
  • Experience with public speaking, group facilitation, and communicating with senior leaders.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of conservation-related issues;
  • Knowledge of governance and management best practices and the non-profit sector.

Competencies

  • Effective in establishing and maintaining strong relationships with a broad range of individuals and organizations;
  • Excellent management and leadership skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize multiple requests and projects;
  • Ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships with landowners, donors, local citizens, government, other key constituencies, and the greater land trust community.

Asset qualifications

  • French language fluency;
  • Private land conservation knowledge and experience;

CEO Responsibilities

The main role of the CEO is to lead and implement the Nature Trust’s strategic objectives and manage the operations of the organization. The CEO works closely with the Board of Directors and Board Committees. The CEO supervises department managers to ensure each department delivers on their goals in the Strategic Plan and are successful within their departments.

Leadership

  • Works in collaboration with staff, and community agencies and groups, to accomplish objectives and fulfill responsibilities;
  • Encourages team-building by facilitating communication and positive working relationships with staff;
  • Establishes control and follow-up mechanisms for the organization;
  • Acts as a spokesperson of the organization.

Human Resource Management

  • Creates and implements culture promoting retention of employees;
  • Hires, supervises, evaluates, and releases staff and/or supervises the recruitment, selection, orientation, and training of intern/temporary staff or volunteers;
  • Trains, mentors, motivates, evaluates and monitors staff;
  • Sets clear, results-oriented goals, with realistic and measurable outcomes;
  • Assists individuals in developing the necessary skills to be successful within the organization.

Financial Management

  • Develops, supervises and administers organizational and program budgets;
  • Implements the board’s policies for the allocation and distribution of resources;
  • Supervises the application of sound bookkeeping and investments;
  • Provides the board with regular statements of revenues and expenditures.

Program Management

  • Facilitates the research, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of program and service activities;
  • Makes sure that programs and services meet the board’s policy guidelines and reflect the board’s priorities;
  • Supervises the implementation of the organization’s programs and services;
  • Facilitates the negotiations and legal requirements in the establishment of Nature Preserves;
  • Coordinates Board of Director’s activities.

Visioning

  • Assists the Board and participates in the creation of an organizational vision;
  • Develops profitable strategies for the organization and implements organizational vision;
  • Develops and/or approves programs and services that work towards the vision of the organization.

Strategic Planning

  • Conducts an internal and external environmental scan and analyzes problematic situations if they arise to ensure organizational growth and continued ability to operate;
  • Develops business strategies and plans that align with short-term and long-term objectives;
  • Sets specific organizational goals and outcomes, management practices and program goals;
  • Leads the staff in implementation of departmental strategies while following all applicable policies ;
  • Communicates with key stakeholders to identify the changing needs and conditions of the community that is served by the organization;
  • Considers the impact of several alternative plans to address the changing conditions.

Fund Development

  • Drives key results in fundraising through effective and ethical donor relations and corporate relations;
  • Promotes fundraising culture within the organization;
  • Directs fundraising campaigns and securement of grants;
  • Interfaces with donors and foundations;
  • Develops and implements the Fund Development strategy;
  • Identifies and researches funding opportunities and government funding programs;
  • Supervises the membership recruitment plan.

Policy Management

  • Oversees the daily operations and business activities of the organization and ensures that results are consistent with the organizational strategy and mission;
  • Identifies policies to develop and/or review, as required;
  • Enforces adherence to legal guidelines and policies;
  • Prepares procedure statements for board policies.

Risk Analysis

  • Identifies and evaluates the potential risks and liabilities, threats and opportunities of the organization;
  • Assesses risks to the organization’s financial security and growth;
  • Provides regular, reliable, and comparable reports on the organization’s progress.

Advocacy Management

  • Promotes community awareness of the organization’s mission;
  • Serves as an ambassador of the organization when dealing with government representatives, indigenous nations and high-profile donors/sponsors and other organizations;
  • Builds strong working relationships;
  • Acts as an advocate for the organization and its programs in the community;
  • Facilitates a communication plan that informs the community of the activities and direction of the organization;
  • Represents the organization at high profile public speaking opportunities.
