For over 60 years, Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division (CMHA-AB) has focused on community-based services, recovery and support for Albertans impacted with mental health and/or addiction issues. CMHA-AB operates as a registered charity within the not-for-profit sector. We work at the intersection of clinical and local mental health care. Our projects and services are developed to address the unique needs of individuals and communities across Alberta.
Indigenous youth and young adults continue to disproportionately experience challenges and barriers to accessing mental health resources. The Integrated Mental Health Services Youth Hub model provides a mechanism to support a true collaborative approach to streamline existing services, increase accessibility, and reduce some of the burden on our already over-capacity mental health system. Integrated Youth Hubs are youth-friendly, prevention focused environments that integrate mental health and addictions services, peer support, social services, primary health care with Elder and Knowledge Keeper connection, traditional cultural healing approaches, and cultural events.
Through an Indigenous world view, and under the direction of the CMHA Alberta Division Integrated Youth Hub Project Lead, the Indigenous implementation coach position will support designated communities in the community-led design, development, and implementation of the Integrated Youth Hub initiative. By providing a range of supports and expertise to ensure the mission and vision of communities’ strategies aligns to the strategic direction of Collaborative Oversight Committee, the implementation coach will guide communities in realizing long term systemic transformation in coordinated access to mental health care for youth and young adults.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assist the Indigenous advisory team in culturally adapting youth hub resources to support and reflect Indigenous world views
- Provide implementation and development support to integrated youth hub communities including:
- Maintaining regular communication with communities
- Identifying and arranging relevant professional development opportunities
- Supporting the development of an inclusion strategy for all community youth hub initiatives
- Facilitating planning sessions and difficult conversations
- Attend steering committee meetings for assigned communities
- As an integral implementation team member, support and inform the evaluation team, and ensure continuous improvement of implementation framework and processes
- Support collaborative governance development and sustainability in youth hub communities.
- Identify and support implementation planning that identifies and addresses barriers to accessing mental health services, locally, regionally, and across the province.
- Foster strong relationships with local, regional, and provincial stakeholders.
- Provide opportunity and support for youth hub coordinators to build a strong community of practice.
- Create and/or identify opportunities for collaboration with other CMHA programs.
- Transfer of knowledge and information between communities, project lead, and governance committee.
- Recognize and communicate issues requiring escalation to project lead and/or CMHA AB executive leadership.
- Provide regular reporting for executive leadership, committee, and funders.
- Assist in budget planning.
Skills and Abilities
- Experience and knowledge in youth mental health trends and barriers to access to services.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health resources across the province that align with youth hub concept.
- Ability to work in a dynamic and shifting social, political, and organizational context.
- Knowledge and experience in community development, collective impact, and program implementation principles
- Comprehensive understanding of inclusion, diversity, and equity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Solid critical thinking and planning skills; some research experience will be an asset.
- Self-motivated; able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining regular communication.
- Proven track record with community development projects.
- Project management experience with diverse sectors including government, community agencies (social service providers, etc.) primary health and mental health service providers.
- Experience with report writing, grant writing, partnership building, and budget management.
Education (Professional Certification/Designations)
- Completed or currently enrolled in a related degree or diploma program (Human/Health Services, Education, Social Work) OR demonstrated experience.
- Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C.
- Clear Criminal Record Check.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Mental Health First Aid and Suicide Awareness training is an asset.
- Must have own vehicle and valid driver’s license.
- This position is a full-time permanent position working 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, typically Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Position is a weekday business hour position, with some weekends and evenings as required.
- Occasional travel to designated youth hub communities will be required.
- Work from Home position (Edmonton residents may work out of CMHA Alberta Division Office, however, temporarily remote due to COVID-19); must be able to sit at a computer for several hours.
