Reporting to the Security Manager, the Virtualization and Network Specialist (the Specialist) is responsible for ensuring the integrity, efficiency and high reliability service delivery of ongoing system operation activities at the Centre for Advanced Computing (CAC). Working as a key member of the Security Operations Team, the incumbent implements, maintains, manages, upgrades and actively monitors virtualization and networking solutions, system configuration, hardware, software, and related infrastructure. As an end to end diagnostician, the Specialist troubleshoots network issues, and audits systems and processes to enhance security and ensure recoverability of confidential client data. This position assists in the design, engineering and development of the CAC’s network standards and IT security strategies, including new processes to manage the computer networking and system infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted support to the CAC. The Virtualization and Network Specialist is required to maintain a high degree of technical knowledge, evaluating new network technologies to meet the needs of the University’s research community in the diverse and rapidly changing computing industry, and provide technical support / services to the research platform, including technical and user documentation.

 

The schedule for this position requires the incumbent to work occasional early mornings, evenings and/or weekends, and may also require participation in an on-call rotation to provide system support outside of regular work hours.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • In consultation with the Security Manager, and working closely with the Security Operations Team, determine the technological and resource requirements for network and security infrastructure. Analyze, install, configure, monitor, maintain, and perform upgrades on both hardware network appliances, and operating systems.
  • Implement, monitor, and manage virtualization platforms and Hyper converged technologies.
  • Create new virtual machines, assign resources, configure backups and snapshots.
  • Manage file repositories and data stores both local and remote.
  • Administer physical and virtual switch configurations, implementing VLANs, trunks, network subnets, and firewall rules as necessary in accordance with security and best practices.
  • Assists in the design, engineering and development of the CAC's network security strategies and critical incident response protocols. Contributes to the planning and evaluation of new technologies as potential components of the network strategy.
  • Acts as one of the high-level diagnosticians for very difficult or complex network problems. Evaluates, programs, and ensures trustworthiness and reliability of network security policies. Assist in the development of standards and monitors adherence to established policies and procedures. Researches information management tools for the networks and designs monitoring methods.
  • Ensure logging, authentication, system configuration and vulnerability scanning are configured in accordance with security and best practices.
  • Establishes a network performance baseline; designs and oversees the audit of performance measurements against the quality standard baseline.
  • Research and support implementation of best practices and technological developments to ensure that systems are current and capable of supporting future evolving business requirements in all areas.
  • Develop network and security processes and policies to ensure that procedures are promoted and followed by clients. Adapt processes and services to respond to change, to increase efficiency and effectiveness, and to ensure that administrative systems adhere to the CAC’s business plan and the University’s goals.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate security processes and mechanisms to ensure data integrity and intrusion prevention. Audit and evaluation systems regularly, and advise on upgrades and improvements as required.
  • Provide maintenance and technical support for production systems. Ensure that system security, backup, and recovery mechanisms are operational. Provides high-level user support in specific software areas for network systems.
  • Prepares work-ups on the feasibility of projects using knowledge of the department or unit’s policies, procedures and business operations. Assists in the definition of the functional requirements of projects, i.e., the scope, and the various system components both manual and automated. Creates supporting analysis for budget preparation.
  • Ensure that outstanding operational problems are addressed on a daily basis. Contribute to restoring networks in the event of failure at any time of the day by diagnosing problems, contributing to the resolution plan by recommending solutions, and taking corrective action.
  • One of the key members of the on-call staff to provide continuous, uninterrupted support for the networks at CAC.
  • Writes technical documentation on the design and implementation of the networks for other staff in CAC and end-user faculty researchers and departments.
  • Maintain a high degree of knowledge/expertise in the use of computer operating systems, security, networking, communication protocols such as TCP/IP networks, and other aspects of information technology.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • University degree, with a technical concentration, such as Engineering, Computer Science or related field.
  • Several years (minimum 5 years) relevant experience working within the information technology field.
  • Demonstrated experience in installing, and maintaining reliable, large-scale, multi-user computer and virtualized environments.
  • Proven Experience implementing and managing large and complex data networks, wireless networks, LAN/WAN/WLAN security, and network components such as switches and firewalls. Proven experience with vulnerability assessment techniques and technologies. Demonstrated experience with enterprise level multi-application networks.
  • Proven experience supporting and maintaining VMware ecosystem. VxRails, and vSAN is an asset.
  • VMware VCP/HCI certifications or equivalent.
  • CCNA, Routing and Switching Networking Certification or equivalent required.
  • Systems Administration experience using Linux and Windows Server is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of the University’s structure, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of various university information systems and policies and procedures.
  • Criminal background check (CPIC) required.
  • Consideration maybe given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS:

  • Experience in delivering and supporting high availability networked systems.
  • Knowledge of vCenter & vSphere Administration and scripting.
  • Familiarity with Windows Active Directory or OpenLDAP and the ability to integrate systems with it.
  • Technical support and analyst skills in use of back-up tools, managing backup & restoration implementation and testing.
  • Complex IT system administration skills in working with dedicated appliances and Linux based firewalls.
  • Experience with programming and scripting using Python and bash is as asset.
  • Ability to assess computer needs and products, and implement technology-based solutions for operational problems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to determine and troubleshoot software and hardware configuration issues across a variety of technologies, understand problems or assist in systems design / development as well as research solutions for problems that may have no readily available support.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills to interact with both technical and non-technical staff and clients at all levels.
  • Must be able to work in a client-service, team-based environment.
  • Strong reading and writing skills needed for the documentation of system and application software.
  • Effective time management skills to handle a broad range of responsibilities and frequent interruptions.

  • For complex network troubles, decides on diagnostic methods, interprets results, and chooses solutions.
  • Determine the timing and how best to apply system upgrades and enhancements in order to optimize network infrastructure and operating systems
  • Evaluate various technologies and recommend appropriate action.
  • Allocate time, prioritize tasks and determine work flow. Continually assess and adjust priorities and manage tasks in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Ability to evaluate and make recommendations such as the purchase or acquisition of new systems, peripherals and software.
  • Determine when and how to involve the Security Manager in issues relating to the department or whether to take action independently.
  • Assesses the nature of a request and assists the customer as appropriate.
