Location: Our head office is located in Ottawa, Ontario, however we welcome remote work outside Ottawa or a blend of onsite/work from home if the candidate is from the Ottawa area. Note that all staff are currently working from home and no travel is permitted. We are continually reassessing during the pandemic.

Healthcare Excellence Canada is seeking 6 full-timeImprovement Leads to join our team. Four of these Improvement Lead positions are 1-year contracts. The other Improvement Lead positions are permanent. Below are the portfolios the Improvement Leads will support:  

  1. Strategic Initiatives and Engagement (1-year contract): Safe Virtual Care HEC is working in partnership with Canada Health Infoway and other partners to identify and support the spread of best practices so that more people (patients and primary care providers) can benefit from equitable, safe and high-quality virtual primary care. The program design will incorporate lessons learned from HEC programming and leading best practices to support change management and improved digital health literacy among primary care providers, patients and caregivers.    
  2. Health Innovations Programs (Permanent): The Health Innovation program team identifies, designs and delivers a suite of activities that influence and guide evidence-informed policy to improve quality and safety of care within and across health systems. Our team currently offers three programs: EXTRA, TeamSTEPPS, and Safety Improvement Projects (SIP). The EXTRA program is designed to build leadership and organizational capacity to transform the healthcare system. Teams apply to join EXTRA and carry out improvement projects that address real-life health system challenges by finding and implementing evidence-informed solutions. Teams receive dedicated support and coaching for the design, implementation and evaluation of their improvement project. TeamSTEPPS is the acronym for Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety. It is a teamwork system to improve institutional collaboration and communication relating to patient safety. The SIPs include knowledge translation activities identified through an evaluation of multiple patient safety collaboratives. 
  3. Patient Partnerships and Engagement (1-year contract): The Patient Partnerships and Engagement team is leading two collaborative programs based on identified priorities of patients, families and caregivers: Bridge to home supports improved care transitions from institutionalized care to home and community; and Essential Together aims to support health and care organizations to safely reintegrate the physical presence of essential care partners in health and care settings. The Patient Partnerships and Engagement team also support capacity development of healthcare organizations across Canada to become ‘engagement capable environments’, as well as the internal capacity of HEC staff to embed consistent and meaningful engagement practices in HEC activities and programs. 
  4. Programs and Systems Transformation (Permanent): Working closely with valued partners and stakeholders who have a vested interest in safety and quality, we will advance shared goals, and support meaningful engagement with patients, families, caregivers and those who have diverse experiences. Our ultimate goal within the Supportive Care Initiative is to define excellence in care for older adults in the “Re-imagining Care of Older Adults” program. Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC) has numerous supportive care programs working in areas of Long Term Care, Home Care and Palliative Care and therefore strong linkages will be made to leverage opportunities to integrate programming across several portfolios within the organization. 
  5. Innovations & Strategic Development Long Term Care+ (two positions; 1-year contract): This portfolio supports the LTC+ and LTC Expanded Programs. LTC+ was launched in summer 2020 for the long-term care and retirement home sector to rapidly share with and learn from each other and strengthen pandemic preparedness and response. This program expanded in early 2021 to support substance use facilities and shelters caring for people experiencing homelessness (LTC Expanded). The LTC+ program includes a research component (Implementation Science Teams) and both programs include access to seed funding, coaching and virtual learning series.  This role will focus on supporting both the LTC+ and LTC Expanded programs. 

 

Your core responsibilities would include: 

  • Leading project management and accountability for deadlines/deliverables for HEC programs. 
  • Supporting environmental scanning for program design. 
  • Coordinating and communicating program events and activities with external teams, faculty, coaches, partners, and stakeholders. 
  • Data collection and reporting to support evaluation and performance measurement. 
  • Tracking, reconciliation of program budget and payment processing. 

 

Education and experience you will need to have: 

 

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree (Master’s level preferred) in healthcare improvement, health policy, public health, epidemiology, community health, or related discipline, or a combination of education and experience. 
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in a similar function. 
  • A demonstrated ability working in health and healthcare, particularly healthcare improvement. 
  • Excellent project management skills including the ability to plan and carry out broad assignments including planning and coordinating large and small meetings where complex subject matter is discussed, often involving collaborative efforts, ensuring their timely completion. 
  • Extensive and superior research, analytical and technical skills including an ability to independently execute each phase of an analysis. 

And even better if… 

  • You are bilingual in English and French (English communications at Advanced “C” level). 
  • You have advanced software skills including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, electronic mail and calendaring. 
  • You understand statistical terms and concepts and possess strong data management background supporting healthcare analytics.

  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience writing research summaries and reports and an ability to summarize, interpret and synthesize complex information. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills including experience developing and maintaining strategic partnerships and networks of stakeholders. 
  • An ability to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills requiring probing for information to determine the nature of the problem; developing unique solutions; comprehension of highly complex material. 
  • An ability to multi-task and manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously. 
  • A high degree of tact and diplomacy to deal with high profile external contacts. 
  • The ability to be well organized and attentive to details. 
  • The ability to work in a self-directed fashion making optimal use of time. 
  • The ability to work well in a small, dynamic and highly motivated team.
