SCLS is a non-profit community based legal clinic that provides clinic law services to low income individuals in a culturally diverse community.  Our work includes individual case work, public legal education, law reform, and community development activities in the areas of housing, income maintenance, immigration, and employment law.

We are looking for an enthusiastic social work student or recent social work graduate to join our team as a community support worker/social worker. The funding for this position is being provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients to assess service needs
  • Assist clients in setting goals and developing strategies for problem solving
  • Research appropriate programs and services for client’s non-legal needs
  • Complete warm referrals for clients to community service providers
  • Connect and liaise with community service agencies to build working relationships
  • Maintain accurate notes and records
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Perform clerical/secretarial tasks related to work

Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program or has obtained a BSW degree
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and working for positive social change on issues that affect low income individuals and groups.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative work approach and the ability to work well in a team based environment.
  • Awareness of community resources in Scarborough is an asset.
  • The ability to speak a second language is an asset.
  • The candidate must be between 15 to 30 years of age at the start of employment (this is a condition of the Canada Summer Jobs funding agreement)

 This is a full-time contract for a period of 16 weeks. The salary is $14.25 per hour.
