DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Agriculture Assistant:

 

·     Garden maintenance: weeding, watering, pest control, up-keep and maintenance of composters and general  tidying of grounds

·     Assistance with crop production as needed (including, but not limited to: direct seeding, greenhouse starts, transplanting, crop rotations, compost production, weeding and invasive plant control etc.)

·     Help with harvesting on required days

 

Public Awareness Ambassador

·     Assist with public education in the area of compost related activities

·     Assist with public event planning, setup, and take down

·     Assist with social media upkeep and environmental awareness to residents

·     Provide information to the public about the local Recycling Program and environmental issues

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

·     This position is provided in partnership with Canada Summer Jobs. Eligible applicants must:

Be between 15 and 30 years of age;

Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;

Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment;

Be legally entitled to work in Canada

·     Experience with gardening and backyard composting

·     Experience with public speaking

·     Education in Science leading towards a degree in horticulture/floriculture/agriculture is beneficial

 

 

RELEVANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interpersonal skills; proficient in English oral and written communication
  • Experience working with newcomers to Canada an asset
  • Personal management skills; can work independently
  • Ability to work with others; can take direction
  • Interest in horticulture/agriculture and the environment
  • Some knowledge of Abbotsford Mission Recycling Program
  • Valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle
  • Flexibility to work statutory holidays, weekends and evenings, as required
  • Physically fit and able to work in a hands-on industrial and outdoor (all weather) environment
  • Must maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check
