Summary of Responsibilities

 

The SAIP (Sexual Abuse Intervention Program) Counsellor provides counselling and support services to victims of sexual abuse and their families, and service to children and youth who engage in sexually obtrusive behaviours. The target group for the program is children and youth aged four to eighteen years. The SAIP Counsellor also provides consultation and education regarding sexual abuse to the community at large.

 

JOB DUTIES

 

Under the supervision of the Family Team Coordinator, the SAIP Counsellor: 

  • Provides counselling to children and youth who have disclosed sexual abuse or exhibited symptoms without disclosure.
  • Provides counselling and support to family members who have been affected.
  • Provides goal-oriented treatment using various therapeutic modalities including cognitive and expressive therapies.
  • Facilitates counselling groups for children and youth in target group.
  • Provides consultation, education, and/or information to the community regarding sexual abuse and its treatment possibilities through informal discussions and formal presentations.
  • Participates as a constructive and integral member of the Family Counselling Team including involvement in regular meetings for intake, case consultation, sharing of information and expertise.
  • Exchanges information with other service providers through informal discussions, formal reports, inter-organization meetings, and case conferences for the purpose of coordinating service delivery.
  • Maintains required documentation and records and prepares reports for the Coordinator, program funders, and other agencies, including statistical reports, descriptive reports, status reports, file, and other pertinent documentation.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of and ensures accountability to relevant legislation and BGC policies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • Master’s degree in counselling, social work, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training in Trauma and Somatic work and/or in Expressive Play Therapy is an asset.
  • At least one-year relevant work experience.
  • Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Personal maturity, sound judgment, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a working knowledge of community-based programs and related provincial and community support services systems (preferred).
  • Knowledge of relevant government legislation and policy.
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies related to substance abuse, suicide prevention, abuse and neglect of children and youth, etc.
  • Knowledge of relevant counselling and assessment techniques therapies used with children, youth, and parents.
  • Knowledge of group process and skilled in the use of facilitation techniques
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variable workload and handle the pressure of multiple tasks and deadlines, many involving confidential information.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Reliable vehicle insured for business use and $2 million liability.
  • Class 4 drivers’ license.

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) with benefits at 6 months and pension after one year.
