Position Description: The Employment Specialist is responsible for carrying out the Employment Ontario Employment Services program at The Career Foundation by assisting clients to obtain and maintain employment that is consistent with their career goals.  


Position Type: Full time one year contract (very strong possibility of extension)

Reporting to: Manager, Employment and Training Services

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Manages a caseload of hundreds of clients annually, ensuring that written documentation and statistics for each file are completed in time and consistently up to date
  • Conducts personal interviews to establish eligibility and needs, establish a professional and supportive “first contact” for the clients
  • Develops an Action Plan for clients, using the results of the Client Needs Assessment and in-depth interviews
  • Assesses the wrap-around resources and guide each client to build a support network to help address personal and environmental issues that affect their abilities to conduct job search effectively
  • Determines client eligibility for Financial Supports; administers the individual supports; ensures proper documentation is included on file to support these expenditures
  • Provide crisis intervention support and counselling services for clients, support the empowerment of clients during the implementation of service plans
  • Conducts timely follow-ups with clients, provides repeat one-on-one counseling sessions with participants to review goals, address problems and ensure progress is being made
  • Provides support to clients for disability awareness-building, job adaptations, social support, problem-solving, and the development of supports
  • Provides effective individual/group job search readiness support to all participants (Internet job search, interview preparation, informational interviews, employment research methods, employer contacts, job postings/leads, cold calling, Employment Standards Act, Health & Safety, Ontario Human Rights Code, customer service, conflict resolution, understanding the workplace,  etc.)
  • Conducts one-on-one career assistance providing participants with job-seeking skills, personal awareness, motivation and self-esteem, goal setting, resume development, interview techniques, and other activities as determined needed
  • Provides job coaching to participants on appropriate work habits, behaviours and attitudes during their participation in the ES service and the workplace
  • Coaches and motivates participants during the job search, guides and supports clients in the daily completion of job search tasks
  • Provides one-to-one or group sessions on job maintenance skills to ensure that participants can handle challenges on the job with professionalism and maturity
  • Analyses, evaluates and interprets collected information to assist participants in targeting the most suitable employment based on their experience, education, and existing labour market factors
  • Collects labour market information for clients regarding job openings, entry and skill requirements, and other occupational information
  • Provides solution-based counselling in the areas of job search, job placement, career decision making, job maintenance, or other identified employment needs
  • Conducts active job search with clients including cold calling employers, assisting with online applications, researching employers via LinkedIn
  • Assists clients with identifying top employers of interest and creating a marketing plan to present their candidacy; model contacting employers to help clients develop marketing skills
  • Arranges consultation meetings with job developers to discuss backup strategies for clients who did not succeed in getting a job through job placement service
  • Coordinates and conducts marketing and outreach activities to build relations with employers, associations and key players in sectors as needed
  • Participates in community events, job fairs, and related activities to inform job seekers about The Career Foundation and recruit them for the program
  • Provides coverage for team members to maintain service levels at all times in the areas of intake, customer service, assessment, facilitation, and administration
  • Maintains flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed


Qualifications/ Skills Required:

  • University Degree or diploma is required
  • Preference given to CCDP
  • Experience in client advocacy, employer outreach, employment assessment and case management considered a strong asset
  • Proven track record in a results-driven environment, solid experience in meeting or exceeding targets
  • Must have very strong English written communication skills and the ability to develop job search and business-related documents without grammatical and spelling errors
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, able to take initiative, manage change/transition and multi-task
  • Knowledge of the current labour market trends, the impact of COVID-19 on the labour market, job search techniques and employment research methods
  • Strong internal and external customer service focus with a positive attitude
  • Experience with youth, women's services, internationally educated professionals, newcomers, ESL job seekers, disability issues is an asset
  • Bilingual (English/French) is a very strong asset
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues by maintaining a solution-focused environment
  • Equipped to work remotely with adequate internet capabilities and ability to work from various Career Foundation sites, as needed
  • Knowledge of online communication platforms, techniques, and tools (Zoom, MS Teams and SharePoint) with an aptitude and willingness to learn and work with new technologies
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is an asset
  • Flexible team player – willingness to take initiative to lend assistance where needed to ensure that the team is successful in meeting project goal
  • Assists with various fundraising activities as necessary
  • Other duties as required
