ABOUT DIRECTIONS YOUTH SERVICES
Directions believes in the resiliency of Vancouver’s youth who are at-risk, homeless, and street-involved. For many youths, home is not a place of safety or belonging. We strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use, mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions is committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.
Directions Youth Services provides 24/7 support to assist youth under the age of 25 to connect with supports, get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues, and transition to more permanent housing. Directions runs 12+ programs inclusive of shelter and drop-in, safe houses, detox and other unique programs for youth throughout Vancouver and employs more than 220 passionate, team members.
Directions is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community.
To support and assist at-risk youth to secure safe, affordable housing, and to work one to one with youth to promote positive choices and to further develop their life skills. Provides direct housing life skills training to youth living independently in market housing. Position works on supporting youth in successfully fulfilling their independent housing goals. This position supports youth facing barriers to finding and/or maintaining housing.
Hours of work: 35 hours/week - Position may require some weekend and evening work
Develop, implement and monitor individual service plans for youth, in collaboration with the youth, other connectedresources and colleagues
Plan, prepare and conduct group or individual support sessions to respond to identified problems, needs and risks
Assess and manage risks when working with clients
Navigate and facilitate interactions with youth in the community that are responsive to youth’s needs
Evaluate and report on service plan-related progress, identify and adapt plans responding to changes in client motivation, and address issues impacting program service delivery
Collaborate and negotiate with external stakeholders and other service providers to ensure comprehensive responsive and effective service delivery
Participate in and represent the agency at community events and tables as appropriate
Plan, organize and implement appropriate recreational, cultural, social and/or educational activities
Take a leadership role in emergency and crisis situations and debriefs where necessary
Conduct preliminary screening and intake assessments, referring individuals to more appropriate services where necessary
Establish rapport, and initiate, develop, and maintain supportive and trusting relationships with youth accessing the programs
In accordance with youth’s service plan, assist in navigating services as appropriate
Participate in service plan review providing observations and input, and where appropriate conduct follow-up on service plans and restrictions
Maintain and ensure consistency in required documentation and financial records
Establish a trusting, non-judgmental, respectful rapport with at-risk youth
Promote safer, healthier alternatives for youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
Provide youth with basic life skills training in areas such as housing and job search techniques, basic communication skills, hygiene, budgeting, shopping and money management
Provide introduction to the various housing resources available to youth
Assist youth in securing safe shelter in the community when stable housing is not available
Provide youth with one-to-one counselling, support, referral and crisis intervention
Participate in ICM strategies
Perform other related duties as required
Education and training:
Three (3) years' experience working with at-risk and/or homeless youth in areas such as child protection, life skill development, community support and/or community outreach
Experience with adolescent development, and issues involving sexual exploitation, mental health, substance use, concurrent issues and poverty.
Bachelor’s degree and/or other relevant education
A combination of education and experience may be considered
Valid class 5 driver’s license (submission of abstract required)
Use of personal vehicle and sufficient liability insurance
Knowledge of community, social and health resources
Knowledge of the systemic issues that affect low income and marginalized people
Basic knowledge of mental health issues and treatment
Knowledge of and belief in the Harm Reduction model
Ability to observe and recognize change in clients
Ability to maintain professional boundaries and establish/maintain rapport with clients
Ability to deal effectively with conflict situations, manage aggressive behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques
Knowledge of substance use, adolescent development and the problems encountered by chemically dependent individuals; basic understanding of behavioural management
Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines
Ability to establish/maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees, to deal tactfully and effectively with co-workers, public and other agencies and to maintain confidentiality
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work in a culturally diverse population
Mid-level computer literacy including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
Administratively organized for file management and stat collection
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
