We are seeking an Executive Director to chart an exciting new course for our organization! This person is a passionate advocate for literacy, a natural collaborator, and strategic thinker. The successful candidate will be committed to building strong community relationships and have a desire to work with others to have a bigger impact. A change agent who is innovative, open-minded, flexible, and persistent, our next leader will have a win-win approach to problem solving.

Comfortable working in a rural community, the successful candidate will have a good understanding of non-profit finances, including project-based funding, grant applications, reporting and their implications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing dynamic leadership to the organization and the community, in partnership with the Board, to guide the organization with inspired long-range planning while fostering effective team work and representing MVCALS within the communities it serves to enhance the organization’s profile
  • Identifying and assessing the needs of the community to ensure the organization effectively meets the evolving needs and expectations of the community, Board, and Funders within Mountain View County
  • Working with the Board, developing and implementing a fund development plan to secure adequate funding for programs and operations
  • Providing hands-on leadership and execution of fundraising initiatives such as grant writing and reporting; event management; soliciting direct individual and corporate donations, gifts in kind, and sponsorships; organizing casinos; and obtaining support from private and public foundations
  • Overseeing the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services to ensure that MVCALS operates effectively in the community to achieve its vision and mission in ways consistent with its values and commitment to adult, family and community literacy.
  • Supporting strong fiscal accountability by working with staff and the Board to prepare and monitor budgets that optimize the use of MVCALS finances, staff, volunteers and resources
  • Representing MVCALS and its values and mission in the community-at-large by establishing excellent working relationships and collaborations with community groups, funders, politicians and other organizations
  • Identifying and evaluating risks to MVCALS people (clients, staff, management, volunteers), property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks
  • Supporting the Board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities
  • Providing the leadership and long-term vision necessary to increase MVCALS capacity and fiscal sustainability.

 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • At least five years of experience in a managerial position
  • Experience working collaboratively with a volunteer Board of Directors
  • Collaborative and engaging leadership style
  • Passion for and understanding of literacy in a community context
  • Excellent communication skills: demonstrated ability to tailor communication to different audiences, particularly staff, funders, community leaders, partner agencies. Comfort with public speaking in a variety of contexts
  • Strong business skills: Strategic planning, people and organizational leadership, sound financial knowledge, innovative program development and human resources management
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent fund development/donor stewardship skills: a strategic approach to developing sustainable funding and a strong financial foundation through establishing strong relationships and support with funders and partners
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and collaborative work environment based on mutual respect, open communication, and encouragement

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, and/or a combination of education and experience.

 

Compensation: starting at $28/hour, commensurate with experience

 

Hours: We offer flexible work hours; 35 hours per week for 44 weeks         

7 weeks off over the summer and 1 week off over Christmas
