The Position
NAHS has a high standard expectation for this position, following the guidelines set forth by BC Housing.

Reporting to the Manager, Housing Operations and in accordance with NAHS mission, strategic direction, principles and policies, the Custodian III is responsible for keeping buildings in a clean and orderly condition and performing rigorous cleaning duties including, but not limited to, cleaning common areas, floors, stairs, spot cleaning rugs/carpets, cleaning and stocking restrooms, washing walls, glass and upholstered furniture, and removing rubbish; laundry services (at some locations); move in/move out unit cleaning; providing coverage during team member leaves.


Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide cleaning duties as directed by the Manager (or designate) while adhering to high standards of cleanliness and appearance; maintain surfaces and equipment in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for custodial duties
  • Organize, stock and clean supply cart; maintain cleaning supplies and linens; conduct monthly inventories
  • Efficiently perform assigned tasks; complete additional related tasks as requested by Manager (or designate)
  • Follow all WorkSafeBC regulations, NAHS safety procedures, and equipment and cleaning product instructions; observe all security protocols regarding alarms, locks and emergency procedures
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with tenants, colleagues and management
  • Initiate and carry out a diverse range of duties with limited supervision; work efficiently to schedule and prioritize work and manage tasks, time and resources
  • Adhere to the highest standards of ethics, integrity and professionalism; maintain cleanliness and appearance
  • Maintain a motivated, responsible, accountable, reliable and flexible approach in a challenging and fast-paced environment

Preferred qualifications include:

o Building Service Worker certification or related training plus 3+ years’ experience in commercial custodial, janitorial or related cleaning work
o Experience working with vulnerable populations including seniors; ability to understand and anticipate tenant needs (e.g. allergies and sensitivities to cleaning products)
o Experience meeting heavy and fast-paced physical demands
o Proven experience in the safe and appropriate use of cleaning equipment, products and chemicals


o Sound knowledge of infection control measures, sanitation and safe work practices, relevant WorkSafeBC requirements and responsibilities
o Excellent communication, problem solving and listening skills; ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing; effective interpersonal and conflict resolution abilities
o Ability to remain calm while performing multiple tasks in a demanding environment


o Standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching and lifting throughout entire work shift
o Working with chemicals
o Frequent lifting and moving of objects up to 20 kg
o Noisy and fast-paced work environment
