The Edmonton Humane Society has been an animal welfare leader in the Edmonton community since 1907. We are a safe haven for thousands of animals in our care each year. EHS plays a key role in the Edmonton region by enriching the lives of people and their companion animals not only through our sheltering, but through our programs, services and community engagement.


The Role

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Animal Welfare Advisor is responsible for offering technical, scientific, and ethical guidance to ensure EHS adheres to high animal welfare standards and mitigate any potential welfare risks. The Animal Welfare Advisor provides support to all departments and the CEO to ensure the organization holistically reflects evidence-based and best practices in animal welfare and sheltering.


Key Roles & Responsibilities


This position is responsible for a variety of duties as follows:


Consultation & Support

  • Provide consultation and support to all departments regarding animal welfare and sheltering using evidence- based research and best practices
  • Research current evidence-based practices and liaise with other animal welfare organizations to identify and implement opportunities
  • Review/prepare content and communications related to animal welfare and sheltering
  • Develop and support animal welfare and sheltering staff training and education

Project Management, Operations & Resource Development

  • Implement and maintain Asilomar Accords data collection system
  • Develop and report metrics that evaluate animal welfare and sheltering performance
  • Participate in Protecting Animal Welfare (PAW) meetings
  • Review and create position statement and pet resources

External Representation

  • Represent EHS on external committees related to animal welfare, policy and advocacy
  • Respond to external inquiries related to animal welfare and sheltering, including media interviews
  • Participate in Humane Canada member duties and activities
  • Attend animal welfare and sheltering conferences, workshops, or other events

Education & Experience

  • Degree in animal welfare or related field
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in a related field; shelter experience would be an asset
  • Experience in searching for and assessing validity of research literature including journals, reports, guides and websites would be an asset

Skills & Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you have a passion for people, performance and diversity within the lens of animal welfare. You have excellent organizational, time management, and communicaiton skills and have proven experience with offering technical, scientific and ethical guidance.


You are an advocate for animal welfare and have the ability to asses the welfare of our animals using data and observations.



Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.


Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities and some evenings and weekends may be required.
