Position Title:       Coordinator, Plusone Mentoring  

 

Location:               Tong Louie Family YMCA (14988 57 Ave Surrey, BC

                                Some work will be completed remotely and virtually until further notice

Regular travel required across Surrey for meetings and events

 

Terms:                   Temporary, Full-Time 

Hours:                    35 hours per week

Schedule:              Monday - Saturday

Some evenings and weekends required for trainings and group activities

 

Salary:                    Under review

 

Start Date:            As soon as possible       

End Date:              December 31, 2021, with possibility of extension based on funding

 

Reports to:           Supervisor, Youth Programs

Plusone Mentoring is a program designed to engage youth-at-risk in the community, ages 10-17 years old, to increase the protective factors that will help ensure their future success and personal well-being. Youth participants (mentees) spend 1 year in the program where they meet weekly with their mentor and are accompanied in sports and recreation, group, and capacity building activities. 

  

Nature & Scope:                   

Under the supervision of the Supervisor Youth Programs, the Plusone Mentoring Coordinator is responsible for an annual cohort of 25-30 volunteer adult mentors and their 25-30 mentees at the Tong Louie YMCA, in Surrey. The coordinator works in conjunction with a second Mentoring Coordinator to coordinate all aspects of the Plusone Mentoring program. Travel is required across Surrey on a regular basis for meetings and activities.

                                                                                                                                                

Responsibilities:  

  • Supervises an annual cohort of 25-30 volunteer adult mentors and 25-30 youth participants (mentees)
  • Training and coaching of volunteer mentors.
  • Assist in matching mentors and mentees based on skills, interests, and participant needs
  • Maintains communication with parent/ caregiver during the youths’ participation in the program
  • Coordinates weekly schedules to provide mentoring pairs access to YMCA facilities for the purpose ofsports and recreation activities. Virtual Programming during COVID
  • Maintain open communication with supervisor regarding match progress in order for supervisor to update community partners.
  • Supports and supervises mentors to ensure that mentoring relationships are healthy and meeting intended objectives
  • Organizes and coordinates regular (8-10 per year) group and capacity building activities for mentors and mentees
  • Responsible for ensuring all tracking documents, plans, and reports are completed and entered in the online database in a timely manner for the purposes of reporting and evaluation
  • Supports mentors to complete weekly reports and tracks progress to ensure reports are submitted on time
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility by spending program budget appropriately and tracking expenses
  • Develops individualized action plans, in collaboration with mentors, for each mentee.
  • Facilitates lines of communication and coordinates processes with other YMCA and partner organization youth programs where mentees can be referred or accompanied by their mentor
  • Provides resources and referrals to program participants as needed, to YMCA or external services 
  • Ensure the safety of all mentors, mentees, staff, and property by following YMCA standards, policies and procedures including the YMCA Code of Conduct, and the YMCA Child Protection & Vulnerable Adult Policy 
  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy in both the specific position and Association, andparticipate in the Annual Campaign and/or other fundraising events. 

 

Qualifications:   

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in youth work or related fields
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in youth work or related fields
  • Experience working directly and overseeing volunteers 
  • Experience working in community basedpartnerships 
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and invisible dimensions of diversity.
  • Ability to work according to a flexible schedule
  • Ability to travel within Surrey, access to a vehicle and a valid driver's license is required
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date   
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate
