FT Behaviour Therapist – St. Thomas, ON

Job Summary:  Reporting to the Program Manager, the Behaviour Therapist develops and implements behaviour programs, and will train and coach all program staff in the application of these programs in connection with the overall support plans of participants. The Behaviour Therapist will perform their work as an effective member of an inter-disciplinary team and will assist with providing a detailed assessment of the functional behaviour of the participants to encourage the health, wellness and community belonging of all program participants.

Hours of Work:  Full time weekdays, including weekends, public holidays, and evenings.  Hours worked to be scheduled as required by program needs. Scheduled shifts may fall any time within a 24-hour day, 7 days a week, including public holidays. This position will be responsible for participating in an on-call rotation.

Duties For This Position Include:

  • Conducting functional behaviour assessments and designing intervention procedures which can be shared with an inter-disciplinary team to support each program participant’s unique needs.
  • Providing direct and indirect support to individuals in their activities of daily living.
  • Utilizing positive behaviour strategies, when possible, to encourage the safety and wellbeing of staff and program participants.
  • Operating in accordance with evidence-based behaviour therapy approaches relevant to the fields of addiction, development, and mental health.
  • Helping individuals meaningfully connect to community resources and supports.
  • Reinforcing individuals’ life skills, spirituality, and social and community skills.
  • Planning and facilitating programs around behaviour management, emotion regulation, and wellbeing.
  • Collecting and assessing data in relation to behaviour programs, evaluating on going needs, and making any necessary changes.
  • Supporting volunteers.
  • Assisting with admission and orientation of new tenants.
  • Supporting individuals to achieve their goals while encouraging independence and recovery.
  • Maintaining a safe and healthy environment.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, addictions or other special needs. They will have a basic knowledge of the principles of behaviour analysis, have skills designing, implementing, and evaluating behaviour intervention plans, and supporting a team of staff. The successful candidate should demonstrate a warm, sensitive and caring approach, the ability to work on a team and independently, be flexible, organized, responsible, and take initiative. Must have strong communication and problem-solving skills, be able to maintain good interpersonal relationships and have a genuine interest in supporting people living with mental illness.  A knowledge of local community resources and support systems is beneficial.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated skill in behaviour therapy, observation, data collection and documentation.

Education/Experience:  Essential Qualifications Diploma or Degree from an accredited college or university in Behaviour Science Technology/Therapy or related field. Experience in behaviour programing – developing, implementing and assessing, in an applied setting (education, health, developmental disability). RBT or BCBA certification (completed or in process) is a strong asset.
