Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and expert in perishable food recovery. We rescue surplus, unsold food from across the supply chain and redistribute it to not-for-profits across the country to feed communities. In 2018, Second Harvest launched its innovative online platform, the Second Harvest Food Rescue App, which enables businesses to donate surplus food to not-for-profit agencies. It is an easy-to-use, free platform that helps users track and manage food donations, while ensuring edible surplus is diverted from landfill. Second Harvest is now operating across Canada and is poised to become the one-stop-shop for food recovery across Canada.

Second Harvest is looking for an adaptive, organized, and energized individual to join our team as the Volunteer Operations Coordinator.  Reporting to the Volunteer Relations & Interim Grants Manager, this position is created to establish and implement the volunteer feature for the Second Harvest Food Rescue App, as well as support the Volunteer Program Team to recruit, train and supervise volunteers as the program expands nationally.


  • Support the pilot roll-out of the Food Rescue App volunteer feature in identified target markets.
  • Recruit, screen, and train new volunteers on the Food Rescue App platform and provide ongoing technical support for volunteers throughout their life cycle as a Food Rescue volunteer.
  • Facilitate rescues using volunteers and act as liaison between Field Operations Staff and volunteers.
  • Become a user expert in MS Dynamics software and support with monitoring volunteer activity on the platform.
  • Execute a user experience survey and obtain ongoing feedback from volunteers.
  • Maintain and track volunteer metrics for Food Rescue activity.
  • Support with developing and executing a Food Rescue group activity feature.
  • Oversee data entry of food rescue volunteers & placements into Raiser’s Edge.
  • Support the Volunteer Program Team with other initiatives including events, food sorts and other on-site volunteer activity as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization.

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in the not-for-profit sector, preferably within volunteer services.
  • Post-secondary education in volunteer management, human resources, social work, or similar field is preferred.
  • Bilingualism in English/French is preferred but not required.
