Early Childcare Educator Assistant (ECEA)


The Cowichan Intercultural Society is a Canadian registered charitable organization that has been operating in the Cowichan Valley Region since 1981.

The Cowichan Intercultural Society provides services and support to newcomers to Canada settling in the Cowichan Valley, and activities to create a more welcoming and inclusive community.

Cowichan Intercultural Society’s Child Care Program offers child care for eligible newcomer children, ensures that parents can access our other programs & services, secure in the knowledge that their children are on-site, safe & engaged.


This position involves supporting the activities of the Child Care Centre under the direct supervision of the Child Care Coordinator. The Early Childcare Educator Assistant is responsible for assisting with the operation of the licensed Child Care Program.



The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working in a Licensed Child Care Program
  • a valid ECEA Certificate, First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • a proven understanding of intercultural and inclusive community
  • strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communications
  • preferably be fluent in a second language
  • computer literacy
  • ability to problem-solve, seek solutions, work independently and as part of the team
  • ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and sufficient mobility to engage in floor

      based play

  • Outgoing and energetic personality
  • Ability to provide a safe and healthy environment


 This position begins as part-time 17 -20 hours per week.  Hourly wage is $18 - $20/hour.

(The program follows the School District Schedule) The role may be expanded according to funder

parameters). This position will start the first week of September.


The successful candidate must provide a criminal record check.  Covid prevention measures are in place to

ensure a safe workplace.

  • Assist with the delivery of safe, healthy, and enjoyable full-time care for children ages 0 months-5 years
  • Work in collaboration with the ECE to plan, organize and deliver the licensed Child Care program that promotes, stimulates, and develops children’s intellectual, physical, and emotional growth in a nurturing play-based learning environment
  • Promote social experiences, respect for others, and self-sufficiency, and provide experiences and play materials that actively promote positive interactions, communications, and diversity
  • Assist in the promotion and enhancement of creative ideas in all program areas including arts & crafts, dramatic play, music appreciation, science and nature, sports, and outdoor play
  • Ensure toys and all equipment is maintained with respect to safety standards and sanitary standards
  • Assist with the set-up and take-down of the activity area, assist children with daily routines including toileting, dressing, eating, and sleeping if needed
  • Always ensure the safety and general well-being of the children
  • Follows all policies, procedures, and standards of the Child Care Centre.
