About us:

The Alberta Foster and Kinship Association (AFKA) is a not-for-profit charitable organization. We provide support to and advocacy for Alberta’s foster and kinship families, educates the community about foster and kinship care, provides and arranges for training and social gatherings, and serves as a liaison between foster and kinship families and Alberta Children’s Services.


Who we are looking for:

The Executive Director of the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association is an inspiring leader who provides strategic, operational, and transformational leadership to support foster and kinship families across Alberta. This position requires a well-spoken, professional, team player who has a strong ability to work collaboratively with board members and stakeholders.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports to the President of the AFKA Board of Directors
  • Manage the business of the Association in the areas of organization, budget management, personnel, and maintenance of financial and membership records
  • Responsible for office procedures, role descriptions and specifications, and personnel practices; reports changes in staff to the Personnel Committee
  • Ensures the widest possible dissemination of information about supports for caregivers, as well as the objectives and policies of the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with the Canadian Foster Family Association, the Ministry of Children’s Services, Indigenous organizations, and other appropriate stakeholders
  • Advises the Board of any provincial/federal legislation released that may impact the organization or its members
  • Assists the Board in carrying out its objectives as set out in the by-laws and policies and procedures manuals
  • Serves on committees as a resource person as designated by the Board of Directors
  • Maintains active contact with regional and district associations and supports their development
  • Prepares an annual report for the annual general meeting of the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association
  • Assists with, or undertakes, public relations including the development of press releases or other communications as directed by the Board of Directors
  • Attends all Board of Directors’ meetings, the Annual General Meeting, and other meetings as required
  • Assists in the continued development of the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association
  • Other duties as mutually agreed upon by the association President



The successful candidate will be a well-versed individual in Alberta’s foster and kinship care sector, responsible for the daily activities of the AFKA. Additionally, the successful candidate will have:

  • Post-secondary education and/or relevant experience
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership role in a not-for-profit sector
  • Working knowledge with administration of not-for-profit organizations
  • Intercultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Knowledge in working with a voluntary Board
  • Strong desire and ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in writing proposals for projects, grant and funding applications
  • Negotiation and public relation skills
  • Have experience managing volunteer-based support programs and events



The position is full-time permanent, depending on the availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
