Position Overview

The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join the Alberta team to lead and grow its flagship initiative, the Business Renewables Centre Canada (BRC-Canada). This person will thrive working with — and constantly learning from — our BRC members and external stakeholders in order to facilitate market-driven, large-scale renewable energy investment in Canada.

BRC-Canada ( is a non-profit initiative of the Pembina Institute that works to simplify and accelerate large-scale corporate and institutional renewable energy procurement across the country. Currently, only Alberta provides the regulatory environment to facilitate these types of transactions. Even with the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, renewable energy procurement has continued to grow, and the need for innovative financing mechanisms, such as virtual power purchase agreements, will be a cornerstone of economic rebuilding efforts. We are confident in our ability to reach a goal of facilitating 2 GW of announced deals by 2025, and potentially more as other provinces take note of the private sector investment creating jobs in Alberta.

We are looking for someone energetic and resourceful with relevant market, policy and technical experience, strong communication skills, a solid work ethic and the tenacity needed to lead the BRC-Canada into the future. The candidate should have an entrepreneurial spirit and excel at building stakeholder relationships. The individual should have an understanding of how corporations function in the sustainability field and/or undertake non-core procurement.

This full-time (40 hours per week) position is based in Calgary and will require travel within Canada, once resumed. While we collectively live through the effects of COVID-19, we have set up protocols to support employees to work remotely. We will maintain flexibility and creative delivery of our services while following all directives provided by government health authorities.

This position offers the opportunity to establish working relationships with energy professionals and leaders across Canada and contribute directly to addressing global climate change by scaling up the deployment of renewable energy.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement BRC strategy to build community, increase awareness and provide effective tools and services, particularly in a post-pandemic business environment
  • Lead a team of analysts and communications staff, and manage contractors when required
  • Increase BRC membership, being sensitive to balance among membership sub-groups
  • Cultivate, maintain and deepen constructive relationships with members, government, industry leaders, industry associations, thought leaders and media
  • Lead and supervise the production of high-quality resources that members rely on to accelerate their transactions, including communication materials, reports, presentations, webinars, briefing notes and funding proposals
  • Increase brand awareness
  • Represent the BRC’s mission and vision at meetings, presentations, conferences and with media
  • Manage the BRC advisory board
  • Manage the initiative’s budget
  • Develop strategies to diversify and increase funding opportunities for the BRC
  • Collaborate with program leads to achieve the vision and goals of the Pembina Institute, and with the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance team, which undertakes similar work in the U.S. market
  • As a member of a leading think tank, contribute by leading or supporting new initiatives of the Pembina Institute

Essential Skills and Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application. They may wish to provide examples of additional qualifications and describe how they would apply these in their role as director of the BRC.

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in business, economics, public policy, law, engineering, sciences or related field
  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience in industry, non-governmental or government sectors working on energy and environmental issues, with at least two years in the electricity sector
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to develop collaborative relationships with a wide array of stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with the ability to convey complex matters in plain language and leverage various communications channels
  • A natural advocate and persuasive communicator who is able to build deep and lasting relationships with members and potential members of the BRC
  • Strategic thinker who can identify various approaches to achieve both short- and long-term strategy objectives
  • Knowledge of the renewable energy sector in Canada, and challenges and opportunities for market-driven renewable energy, both provincially and federally
  • Excellent project and people management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional, and volunteer experiences
  • Well-developed and tested business acumen
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision

Other Valuable Qualifications

  • Experience with corporate sustainability and/or corporate procurement of non-core projects
  • Experience with energy and/or environmental policy advocacy and regulatory reform for environmental protection in the energy sector
  • Experience at multi-stakeholder tables or finding solutions within a group that reflects a range of interests and perspectives
  • Direct experience in developing or implementing provincial and/or federal environmental policy and regulation
  • Experience in public speaking
  • Clear and concise writer who can adapt to a variety of styles, from technical and academic reports to more informal blogs and social media posts
  • Media spokesperson experience
  • Experience in facilitation and/or in chairing meetings and group processes

Compensation and Benefits

The salary rate is competitive for a director in the environmental and non-profit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
