Position Summary: 

The Studio Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient, and effective daily function of the Digital Fabrication & Electronics, Woodworking Studios, based upon established Artscape standard operating procedures (SOP), and under the direction of the Manager, Creative Studios. Key responsibilities include: 1. Ensuring appropriate use of the studios by members by providing both operational and member support for the creative use of tools and equipment, health and safety, creative/technical learning programs, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment, and supporting the execution of products; 2. Facilitating creative learning pathways to other Artscape Daniels Launchpad (ADL) studios and services; and, 3. Contributing technical expertise in the production of prototypes within the confines of the Rapid Prototyping Service (RPS).


Major Responsibilities:

Service Delivery

  1. Fully understand, and help communicate to members and staff, health and safety standards and protocols, appropriately track documents and processes for both groups where necessary (adhering to JOHSC compliance)
  2. Help facilitate the delivery of member creative projects by providing safe and effective instruction and support for use of all studio tools and equipment within the designated studio
  3. Contribute technical expertise in the production of prototypes within the confines of the Rapid Prototyping Service (RPS)
  4. Contribute to the development of technical curriculums for the Studio Technical Programs
  5. Where appropriate provide technical instruction in dedicated sessions based on these curriculums
  6. Carry out other duties to support studio operations as required

Client/Stakeholder Relationships

  1. Ensure the appropriate use of the studios by members
  2. Provide technical support for, and connect members to other Launchpad staff and resources (including other Creative studios) and Artscape wide resources
  3. Be able to talk succinctly to visiting tour groups whether potential new members, donors or partners about what the studio provides and the benefit to Launchpad members

Problems and Organization Solutions/Opportunity/Risks

  1. Assist with the creation, maintenance and continual review of standard operating procedures for studio spaces
  2. Help maintain and monitor material stock levels through the inventory system and on the shop floor
  3. Process payments for consumable products purchased on-site through the in-studio POS system
  4. Raise estimates and invoice documentation for services used within the Rapid Prototyping Service following internal procedures
  5. Help to maintain and problem solve equipment failures in-house or with external vendors
  6. Ensure an organized, clean and safe working environment minimizing and highlighting hazards where necessary
  7. Help monitor member capacity in the studios and update booking calendars where necessary
  8. Emphasize and maintain a respectful and mindful studio culture that prioritizes best practices, professionalism, highlighting proper stewardship of equipment and resources, and upholding the Respect in the Workplace policy of Artscape Daniels Launchpad

Required Qualifications:

Technical Skills, Competencies, and Knowledge

  • A strong knowledge of art, design, creative studio production, and experience in various needs of a technical studio is essential
  • Must possess a high level of experience, knowledge, skills, and expertise, in the tools, equipment, and processes used in either Woodworking, Digital Fabrication, and/or Electronics Studios, with an aptitude and willingness to quickly learn the skills necessary to effectively serve as a technician in all three disciplines
  • Experience using digital design tools such as, but not limited to; AutoCAD, Rhino, Solidworks, 123D Suite, Arduino (IDE), Raspberry Pi, open source coding, and Adobe Suite, as well as strong knowledge of Microsoft Office

Transferable/ Enabling Skills, Competencies, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Strong ability to assist members working in an interdisciplinary manner from concept to fabrication
  • Comfortable juggling multiple and/or conflicting priorities, and a rigorous and empathetic communicator, collaborator, and troubleshooter
  • An understanding and interest in the research and work necessary to create more sustainable practices in this field, including familiarity with a wide range of materials
  • Fluent in verbal and written English, with knowledge of a second language considered an asset
  • Proven experience and commitment to customer service in facilities with high volume use
  • An interest in and ability to contribute to the development of technical curriculums and deliver instructional workshops to small groups in the studio setting


Corresponding Typical Experience and Credentials:

In attaining the above skills, competencies, knowledge and abilities, successful candidates in this role typically have:  

  • Minimum educational attainment/ training in the form of:
    • Diploma or undergraduate degree in Fine Art, Sculpture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Sciences, Architecture, Furniture Design. 

OR equivalent knowledge, skills, competencies, and abilities gained through alternative education or experience

  • Minimum progressiveexperience in the form of:
    • 2+ years progressive experience in: 
      • Art and exhibition Installation Services
      • Rapid Prototyping Shop service
      • Studio Technician within a craft, design school
      • Or other relevant technical and studio experience 


Hourly Rate: $22.50
