Employment Opportunity: Youth Care Counsellor – Overly Creative Minds (OCM) Program
Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA) has a full time employment opportunity for a Youth Care Counsellor in the Overly Creative Minds (OCM) program, which provides arts and culture programming 5 days a week for Indigenous youth ages 12-24 years old. This position will assist in the development and delivery of programming focused on fostering creative expression among participants through weekly and one-time projects related to a variety of cultural, traditional and contemporary art forms. The overall objective of the program is to provide Indigenous youth with safe space to explore their artistic and cultural creativity. The hours for this position will be Monday to Thursday 12pm-8pm, and Friday 9am-5pm for a total of 40 hours a week. However, scheduling will be adjusted based on the needs of youth, and programming opportunities. This position reports directly to the OCM Program Manager and Director of Youth Engagement.
Qualifications and Conditions:
- Child & Youth Worker diploma, post-secondary degree in a social science discipline, and/or experience and knowledge working with youth in drop-in and structured group settings relevant to arts and culture.
- Knowledge of the following modalities:

- Trauma Informed Approach
- Experience in developing and delivering arts and culture programming, including traditional and contemporary arts.
- Demonstrated experience engaging and working effectively with Indigenous youth
- Demonstrated knowledge of the intergenerational impacts of the residential school systems, colonization, the Indigenous Community, and an understanding and willingness to participate in Indigenous protocols, practices, and ceremonies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues, addiction issues, concurrent disorders, and FASD.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Valid Class 4 or 5 BC Driver’s License, FoodSafe, and First Aid are assets.
- Given the needs of youth accessing our services, preference will be given to qualified Indigenous applicants.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Form & maintain positive working relationships with Indigenous youth. Actively recruit participants to ensure ongoing, meaningful youth engagement in all aspects of programming. Ensure the ongoing utilization of appropriate community referral networks.
- Provide ongoing leadership and work in cooperation with others (including UNYA programs and other community partners) as needed to plan, implement, supervise and evaluate programming and initiatives. Positively participate in programming and activities in order provide a positive role model experience for youth.
- Create a safe space for all youth and staff by responding to behaviours and situations through a trauma-informed lens, modelling respectful behaviour, and through thoughtful and fun interactions with staff and youth. Adhere to UNYA’s Philosophy of Care, and all program-specific and organization-wide policies and procedures.
- Develop, promote, and maintain diverse community partnerships to maximize programming opportunities.
- Work together with the OCM Program Manager to take care of the day-to-day operations of drop-in programming. Includes cleaning of the space, creating healthy and nutritious snacks/meals, and opening and closing the space.
- Maintain appropriate statistical records, logs, etc. in order to meet both UNYA and its funder’s requirements. Develop/implement evaluative tools to support program needs and inform ongoing program assessment and evaluation. Prepare and submit reports and evaluations to Program Manager, Director and funder(s) as required
- Establish and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other UNYA programs and other community programs/resources to ensure effective referrals and enhance access to a strong continuum of supports. Ensure that youth are referred to appropriate services in the community, as individual needs require. Provide information, advocacy, and support in the referral process for internal and external programs, as well as other supports in the community.
- Work together with Program Manager to foster a positive, engaging workplace environment. Consult with and report to your Program Manager on a regular basis for ongoing assessment and refinement of the program.
- Perform other duties deemed necessary by supervisor(s) to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operations of the program.
