The Family and Community Worker will engage families involved with the child welfare system and work collaboratively with the child/youth and family to develop and strengthen their network to maximize the family well-being. This position will work collaboratively with the child welfare service team and other appropriate community partners.

This is a full-time contract ending no later than January 31, 2023


Strides Toronto is a multi-service agency providing services to young people from birth to age 29 and their families in East Toronto. Formed in January 2020 through the amalgamation of Aisling Discoveries and East Metro Youth Services, Strides Toronto provides a range of community, residential and treatment services to improve the mental, social, and physical health of infants, children, youth and their families. We provide individual, group and family interventions that include mental health counselling, autism services, education, outreach and referral, early intervention, day treatment and community support. 

As Lead Agency for infant, child and youth mental health in Toronto, Strides Toronto works with 25 core service providers to design and implement system-level improvements that transform access to services, experience of services and the mental health outcomes for Toronto’s diverse communities.  

Strides Toronto has a budget of $30 million and more than 350 employees providing services out of 19 locations across East Toronto. The organization Is accredited by the Centre for Accreditation and the predecessor organizations have a long history of providing high-quality services in East Toronto.

 What will you do? 

  • Work in collaboration with the child/youth and family, and child welfare service team to assess child/youth and family support systems and identify areas strength, and opportunities for family network expansion.
  • Create safety plans in collaboration with the child/youth families and child welfare service team to ensure family safety and well being.
  • Facilitate the client/youth and family voice in the goals and service plans.
  • Engage, support and secure resources to children/youth and their families in a manner that utilizes youth and family engagement strategies and non- traditional approaches.
  • Maintain, through appropriate communication and coordination, a collaborative working relationship with the multi-disciplinary team and other involved professionals both within and outside Children service team and Strides Toronto.
  • Work collaboratively with children youth, parents, CAST and other service providers to develop an effective service delivery plan.
  • Implement strength based, culturally appropriate and evidence-informed practices (ie: motivational interviewing) utilizing an anti-oppressive and anti-racism framework.
  • Identify professional development/training needs and to participate in staff development/ training programs as required by Strides Toronto and CAST.
  • Maintain professional standards of practice in accordance with Strides Toronto policies and procedures, Canadian Centre for Accreditation (CCA) standards, and relevant legislation.
  • Complete record keeping and data entry as per Intensive Family Network Builder Program requirements, Strides Toronto policies and procedures, Canadian Centre for Accreditation Standards and relevant legislation.


What are we looking for?

  • CYW diploma or related bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Work/Counselling,

       Social work or related field

  • At least 2 years’ experience supporting children, youth and families navigate relevant systems (child welfare, education, mental health)
  • At least 2 years’ experience providing assessments, service brokerage and follow up services to children/youth and families.
  • Demonstrated family engagement experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills working with individuals from racialized, LGBTQ2S+, newcomer, and different abilities communities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and excellent written and communication skills with demonstrated ability to handle confidential information, strong computer skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, day, evenings, and weekends is critical.
  • Knowledge of the Child and Youth Family Service act is an asset.


Additional Assets 

  • Fluency in another language(s).

Salary range from $52,540 to $61,800 per annum
