Community Cookbook Designer
Converse and Cook
Work From Home, Edmonton area
closes in 13 days (Sat, 2 Oct)
part time - term / contract  •  $1000 Honourium

Ever wanted your artwork showcased on a book cover? Looking to add to your portfolio? Do projects that build community spark your interest? If so you might be a perfect fit for this role!

Converse and Cook (see or @converseandcook on Instagram for more information) is a 100% volunteered-powered non-profit organization located in Edmonton, Alberta. Our mission is to build social spaces where individuals are empowered to explore their connection to food and their community by creating meals and dining together. One of the ways we’ve done this is through creating community-wide cookbooks to share the rich stories and histories of the people who live in our city, and what food means to them. The previous cookbook we created was centred around sharing stories and recipes of the University of Alberta campus community, including students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Currently, Converse and Cook is interested in telling the story of how various Edmontonians are being resilient and keeping connected during this pandemic by creating an Edmonton community-wide cookbook focused on comfort food. Through cultivating these stories and recipes, we will be able to capture the history of what is happening in Edmonton during this time, while also providing a source of comfort and hope to those feeling isolated and disconnected in our city.  This cookbook is being funded in part by Edmonton Heritage Council.

The Community Cookbook Designer role:

In this role, you're responsible for designing the front, back, and inside covers of the cookbook. You might also have to create a couple of graphics of submitted food dishes (these are for recipe submissions that don’t have high-quality photos attached) along with a graphic image about what comfort food means to Edmontonians  and be consulted by our team around page layouts.

What we’re looking for in an ideal candidate:

  • Graphic and illustrative design experience (ideally previous experience working with other clients and/or non-profit organizations)
  • Ability to work with our organization’s ideas to create something that captures the essence of our cookbook.
  • Ability to communicate boundaries of what is possible and be flexible in incorporating feedback.
  • Knowledge of Edmonton’s landscape. Preference will be given to an Edmonton-based designer.
  • An interest in supporting community-building initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Proactive in asking for support

Time commitment:

  • The position would start October 15th and the deadline to have these pages created would be January 20, 2022.

What we’re offering you:

  • Training- we’ll offer basic training on our organization, the cookbook process and clearly communicate what we are looking for.
  • Mentorship- as it’s within our capacity, we’ll try to provide mentorship and opportunities to help you develop your skills.
  • The opportunity to have your work featured on a project that is city-wide and will be seen by many (it’s a nice addition to any resume, CV or portfolio).
  • A free copy of the cookbook and an invitation to our launch party (2022 date to be determined)
  • A letter of reference

  • This position is remote.

Remuneration: We will pay $1000.00 honorarium to the successful candidate.
