The Role

Reporting to Supervisor, Animal Health, the Veterinary Medical Assistant (VMA) provides care for shelter animals in both a medical and surgical setting. Shelter VMA’s play a key role in ensuring a high level of care and humane treatment is provided to all animals in shelter through tasks such as daily rounds and enrichment support. 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of functions as follows:

  • Assist Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) and Veterinarian with examination and treatment of shelter animals.
  • Perform Daily Welfare rounds.
  • Support intake process of all shelter animals. 
  • Provide enrichment support for animals with special needs. 
  • Maintain shelter biosecurity through routine cleaning/disinfection.  
  • Assist with High Volume/High Quality Spay/Neuter procedures. 

 

Education and Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Veterinary Medical Assistant Certificate is preferred
  • Experience with animals in medical practices and procedures
  • Experience working with computer software

Skills and Abilities

As an ideal candidate, you will have knowledge of companion animals, including exotic species. You can work both independently and within a team and demonstrate an ability to work well in stressful situations and adapt accordingly. 

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: EHS offers a competitive Not-For-Profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.

Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
