Compliance Coordinator

20 - 37.5 hours per week, depending on the preference of the successful candidate

Location in Canada (flexible), with core working hours 10am -2pm PST

Anticipated start date December 1, 2021

 

MakeWay builds partnerships and solutions to help nature and communities thrive together. We are made up of two legal charitable entities: MakeWay Charitable Society, a shared platform home to over 65 innovative community-led projects staffed by 150 change makers; and MakeWay Foundation where about 70 people are advancing place-based programs that support Indigenous-led solutions and conservation in the North, Pacific, Manitoba, and beyond via grant-making, funder collaboratives and other tools.  Our people, projects, and partners are based across the country.

 

This new learning position provides regulatory compliance administration and research support to our operational teams to create the enabling conditions for our programs to thrive. While leading or coordinating administrative tasks, you will receive on the job training in related legislation and its interpretation.  Through meeting coordination, record keeping, and report preparation you will increase your knowledge of MakeWay and of charity operations in general.  Our programs, projects, and grantees rely on our regulatory knowledge and supportive processes to ensure smooth delivery of their work. You will be part of a team that integrates innovative, sector-leading work withing the Canadian charity and philanthropy sector.

 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Build knowledge of regulatory compliance topics in the Canadian charity sector through formal training, self-study, committee participation, and mentorship in order to increase independence in performance of duties and to provide added value in administrative tasks.
  • Work closely with the Sr Manager, Program Operations and Compliance to deliver reliable administration of governance and regulatory compliance tasks with a focus on Board and Foundation operations.
  • Maintain accurate, accessible, and user-friendly records, reference materials, and instructions to allow staff to understand and follow regulatory requirements.
  • Support a variety of departments in the preparation of compliance reporting, insurance renewals, permit applications, record checks, and other regulatory matters.

Experience and Knowledge You Bring:

  • Two or more years’ experience in the Canadian charity sector
  • Two or more years’ experience performing record keeping and reporting in a regulated field
  • Experience interpreting and summarizing legislation, regulations, and regulator guidance
  • Experience running highly effective meetings, including creating agendas and minutes
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365
  • Excellent English reading comprehension and written business English

It Would be a Bonus if You Have:

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Experience as a member of a charity or non-profit board
  • Education or experience in a related field, such as Business Administration, Paralegal, Non-Profit Management, Project Management, or Risk Management
  • Experience creating content in Microsoft Forms, Microsoft PowerPoint, Slido, Screensteps, Smartsheet, DocuSign, or Adobe Acrobat
