We are looking for executive-level leadership to consider fresh approaches to civic engagement and volunteerism. This person or people will lead Volunteer Alberta’s (VA) passionate team to shape our emerging strategic direction.

We are seeking a person or people who are ready to experiment with new ways of working with an organizational team and partners in the growing VA network. That includes reimagining what VA’s network looks like and how a wide variety of groups can support the people who take the time to engage in community building, art, health, sports, environment, and so much more. It includes relationship building for the long-term, and taking risks with new projects, approaches and ideas. It also means cultivating and growing VA’s current relationships to achieve VA’s mission.

VA is learning and growing. We invite new leadership to support the next phase of meeting our renewed mandate to strengthen and create pathways for volunteering and civic engagement.

We encourage creative responses to this call for leadership, whether that be a single candidate or a group of people with diverse skills that wish to collaborate at an executive leadership level. This is a chance to shape the next phase of your work as well as pursue VA’s mission with a dedicated team. Our team is provincial and our main office is currently in Edmonton. We welcome applications from across Alberta and beyond with an interest of relocating to Alberta if they don’t currently reside in the province.

For VA’s executive leadership, a day in the life can include:

Trust and teamwork

  • Leading people through building internal trust and respect, aligning the whole organization around the vision and mission, communicating effectively with between staff and between board and staff, and building strong board-staff relationships
  • Integrating internal operations and broader partnerships and engaging with various stakeholders effectively

Adaptation and bravery

  • Addressing injustices, truth and reconciliation, and systemic inequities internal to VA and externally in the nonprofit/voluntary sector
  • Fostering innovation to seek new ways of working in a new work environment while still developing engagement and accountability
  • Adapting VA’s operations and programs when our emerging mandate around civic engagement requires a different mindset or skills and a shift in focus to include informal networks, social movements, and use of technology communication tools
  • Seeking out new sources of funding (e.g., corporate grants, sponsorships, philanthropy, etc.) and reducing VA’s reliance on public grant funding

Sound management

  • Diversifying revenue and open to social enterprise and other ways of financially supporting VA’s mission
  • Addressing changes to public grant funding and balancing short -term funding initiatives with long-term sustainability funding efforts           
  • Working flexible hours as needed to accommodate meetings and events

Ideal leaders have:

  • Proven ability and experience collaborating to bring together teams and networks to accomplish collective goals
  • Experience with leading diverse teams with humility
  • Created a culture of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within an organization
  • Engaged with diverse groups in the community and mobilized sustainable systemic change around EDI
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit sector and related systems, including government relations
  • Experience with organizational management including finance, personnel, risk, and policy

Ideal leaders are:

  • Change-positive leaders with creative problem solving approaches, including: positive attitudes towards changes that are happening, and openness to new structures and forms of leading an organization
  • Systems-thinkers who are able to understand interactions within a complex system
  • Adaptable and flexible to respond to change
  • Able to develop and activate relationships in the community
  • Able to manage biases and be curious. Consistently growing, learning, self-reflecting, and learning from others
  • Able to think creatively, while taking initiative and appropriate risks.
  • Create a vision beyond the immediate situation, explore and integrate diverse perspectives, and recognize unexpected opportunities.

Salary range: $105,000 - $125,000/year
