Overview of the Position:

The British Columbia Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) and Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC) are seeking a French-speaking trainer with a strong working knowledge of English , with knowledge and expertise related to supporting children and youth who have experienced and/or witnessed gender-based violence in the home. Familiarity with women’s shelter/transition house environments would be a strong asset.

Supported by the Training Coordinator, the French Trainer will be working remotely with an English-speaking team based in British Columbia to deliver virtual trainings in French to frontline shelter workers as part of our project, PEACE for Canadian Children & Youth: Training and Peer Mentorship for Women’s Shelters in Northern, Rural and Remote Communities to Build Specialized Supports for Children & Youth Survivors and Witnesses of Gender-Based Violence.

Overview of the PEACE for Canadian Children & Youth Project:

Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC) http://endvaw.ca/  and the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) http://www.bcsth.ca/have partnered in a three-year project to provide training and mentorship to shelter workers in northern, rural, and remote communities across Canada with the goal of enhancing their capacity to offer specialized supports for vulnerable children and youth who have experienced and/or witnessed gender-based violence.

The training and mentorship for this project is based on BCSTH’s successful “Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment” (PEACE) Program for children and youth responding to violence. Over the course of this project, training will be delivered virtually and free of charge to 30 cohorts of shelter workers from across the country. Each cohort will be connected with a mentor drawn from current PEACE counsellors throughout BC. In addition, project results will be used to generate a legacy blueprint of promising practices that will be available for widespread use.

Funding for this project is provided by Women and Gender Equality (WAGE) Canada.

Trainer Responsibilities and Timeline:

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide direct virtual training in French to 4-6 groups
  • Receive orientation from the Training Coordinator about the training plans, curriculum and materials that will be used
  • Participate in regular consultation and debriefing with the Training Coordinator throughout the training process

November-December 2021:

  • Participate in orientation, training preparation and related tasks
  • Up to 40 hours during this period

January-June 2022:

  • Deliver virtual training for up to 6 francophone cohorts, along with related tasks like preparation, consultation, debriefing and the like
  • If requested, provide information for project reports
  • Up to 192 hours during this period

July 2022-December 2023

  • If requested, be available to support the mentorship process of the training cohorts
  • Up to 48 hours during this period

Qualifications and Background:

  • Demonstrated experience in successful training delivery
  • Knowledge and expertise related to supporting children and youth who have experienced and/or witnessed gender-based violence in the home
  • Understanding and analysis around upholding the dignity of mothers and their children
  • Ability to articulate an analysis of approaches that guide your work (for example, Intersectional feminist framework, response-based, child- and youth centred, strengths-based, violence- and trauma-informed, anti-oppressive)
  • An open and respectful approach
  • A strong working knowledge of English

Additional assets include:

  • Familiarity with women’s shelter/transition house environments
  • Familiarity with rural, remote or northern communities
  • Familiarity with Indigenous communities
  • Experience delivering virtual training

Total Hours and Rate of Pay:

  • The French Trainer position is a temporary, independent contractor position
  • Total amount of hours to meet contracted deliverables for 6 French training cohorts is up to 280 hours
  • Rate of pay is $40 per hour plus GST/HST
