Some travel required to other program sites in the Lower Mainland


Hours:                                    35 hours per week

Shift:                                      Required to work flexible hours as per operational needs

Nature and Scope:

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver has delivered employment programs for over 35 years. Over this period, the organization has become one of the leading service providers in the provision of youth-oriented employment services and other underrepresented groups in the labour force. These programs are designed to support a wide range of job seekers, from youth with multiple barriers to employment attempting to land their first ever job, to newcomers to Canada looking to land their first job in their new home. The YMCA of Greater Vancouver has assisted thousands of job seekers in developing vital skills, acquiring vocational certification, building confidence and securing sustainable employment.


This position has the primary responsibility for managing the YCafe Training program. The YMCA Cafe program will equip program participants from underrepresented groups in the labour force for jobs in the food services sector through classroom based learning and on-the job-training in our YMCA training cafe. The manager will oversee the budgets and operations of the program and café, a staff team of 3 Employment Coaches, 1 Administrative Assistant, and 12 program participants during their YCafé work experience.


Major Responsibilities:       

  • Ensures the delivery of high quality programs and services that meet Provincial, Federal and YMCA requirements and standards.
  • Maintains standards of evaluating the delivery of program/functional area and ensures ongoing tracking and monitoring to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for program budgets and government reports, as well as tracking and monitoring expenditures to ensure programs operate within budget.
  • Managing day-to-day operations of a small café, including food safety, inventory, scheduling and marketing
  • Direct supervision of program team comprising of front line and administrative staff
  • Provides ongoing management of employee and volunteer performance.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders to meet program area requirements.
  • Communicates with stakeholders and addresses issues and concerns as required.
  • Supports contract acquisition through involvement in proposals for funding requests
  • Plans, participates in and supports Association-wide initiatives and fundraising events.



  • Post-Secondary Degree or Certificate in a related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years management experience in the food service sector or career development, or 5 years’ experience for a combination of frontline and supervisory experience in food service and career development
  • CDP certificate is an asset
  • Experience working with people who face barriers in achieving and maintaining employment
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs, staff, and processes to ensure organization operations run smoothly
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of staff and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of BC labour market
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task in high demand environment
  • Advanced MS Office skills
  • High degree of independence and initiative within a team environment
  • First Aid/CPR-C Certificate required
  • Proven responsibility to coordinate tasks and work as part of a team
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/ Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
  • The YMCA has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all staff and volunteers to be vaccinated as per the timelines set out by the province - one dose by September 13 and second dose by October 24.
