This is an 8 week position, 35 hours a week at $16.00 Hours 8:30-3:30– Flexible start date 


Tasks and Responsibilities: 

The Mustard Seed is part of Food Banks Canada, providing grocery hampers to thousands of low income individuals and families each month. Guest Services & the Market serve the community by ensuring basic nutritional needs are met and that people experiencing food insecurity are supported. Direct interactions with clients are part of this position.  We also have a Christmas Giving Program providing food hampers and gifts for children & teens.  We serve 300 families, 700 individuals and 200 couples or multi-adult families. 

Working under the direction of staff, including a Registered Social Worker, the Community Support Services Intern will: 

  • Receive deliveries and donations of food, gifts and other items, organize these and stock for service ensuring compliance with guidelines (Food Banks Canada for food and Mustard Seed policy for gifts) 
  • Rotate stock as needed
  • Help set up Market for food distribution and Guest Services for gift & hamper distribution 
  • Serve clients directly as needed in the Market (food) and/or Guest Services (gifts)
  • Assist clients to car when needed if possible to provide support with transferring food and gifts 
  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the Market including shipping/receiving area
  • Help break down, clean up and organize after service in the Market and Guest Services 
  • Assist clients by providing requested items and/or meeting special dietary needs when possible
  • Work with staff and volunteers to provide excellent service to our community as part of a Team
  • Interact with the general public when receiving donations in a positive, professional manner 
  • Help with set up, cleaning, administration and other duties as needed
  • Mustard Seed team duties as needed/required


This position is mostly funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. 


To be eligible, youth must: 

  • be between 16 (BC) and 30 years of age at the start of this employment; 
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and, 
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • be able to lift up to 30 pounds 


*International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
