The Position:
Title: Senior Accountant
Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

 

The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Director, Financial & Administrative Services, the Senior Accountant is a major contributor towards the day-to-day financial operations for CFS and The Unlocking Potential Foundation (UP), including general accounting, payment runs, G/L coding and journal entries, the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, and assisting the Director with various other items such as budgeting, compliance and tax.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • A major contributor to month-end close process, including preparation of journal entries, revenue recognition and reconciliations;
  • Determine appropriate coding for invoices, expenses and corporate credit cards, allocating on a program by program basis;
  • Assist with periodic payment runs, banking and other related duties;
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual financial statements with comparison analysis against project budgets;
  • Prepare financial reports for funders;
  • Prepare necessary working papers for annual audit and any program audits/reviews that are required with external auditors;
  • Assist with development of annual operating budgets for CFS and UP and budgets for grant applications;
  • Other duties, as required.

 

Qualifications Required:
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ accounting/financial reporting experience, preferably within a not-for-profit organization;
  • An accounting degree, or similar;
  • CPA designation is an asset, or working towards CPA designation;
  • Self-motivated, positive attitude and a strong ability to prioritize tasks and excel in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment;
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, organized and possess a high degree of accuracy;
  • Process oriented with an aptitude and willingness for continuous improvement and gaining efficiencies;
  • Proficiency in learning and navigating a new accounting software (Navision);
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with emphasis on Excel;
  • Core Brain Story Certification through Alberta Family Wellness Initiative an asset;
