Position Description

Leads and supervises staff and provides high quality support to homeless women accessing Carole Anne’s Place, an Out of the Cold program designed to provide a safe, warm, supportive space for women when the shelter beds and overflow beds in the city are full.  Supervises staff providing services that include crisis intervention, supportive counseling, referrals, advocacy, brief goal planning, and programming.

  • Responsible for the overall administration and operation of Carole Anne’s Place;
  • Directly supervises employees including scheduling, training, monitoring and evaluating performance;
  • In collaboration with the frontline team, provides a range of social work supports to women accessing Carole Anne’s Place including goal setting, developing safety plans, crisis intervention, counselling support, and advocacy;
  • Demonstrates tact, discretion and persuasion required in influencing, teaching, motivating clients and employees;
  • Resolves conflicts or highly sensitive situations as a regular and recurring requirement;
  • Oversees initial assessments for the woman accessing services;
  • Advocates on behalf of women;
  • Maintains appropriate record-keeping and expense reporting in accordance with YWCA Hamilton policies and procedures, and confidentiality/privacy policies;
  • Ensures that all policies and procedures for the program are current, and best practices are incorporated at all times and provides recommendations to strengthen policies or processes;
  • Identifies and evaluates risks associated with clients and works with Manager to take appropriate action to control risks;
  • Demonstrates and models strong leadership behaviours as a member of the YWCA leadership team;
  • Fosters a safe and healthy work environment; ensures employees comply with health, safety standards that meet or exceed legislated requirements
  • Nurtures and forms meaningful internal and external working relationships and partnerships;
  • Understands and incorporates emerging trends, leading practices, industry professional standards;
  • Supports YWCA Hamilton mission, vision and values;
  • Perform other duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:          

  • Works a standard 40-hour work week; regularly on-call for emergencies, crisis situations and resourcing issues on a 24/7 basis;
  • Regularly works in emotionally charged situations requiring resolution, which can be hostile or violent at times;

Qualifications

  • Completion of University degree or College certificate in Social Work/Social Services or related field, or equivalent;
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with women with multiple barriers and concurrent disorders;
  • Committed to advocating for and empowering women;
  • Experience working with marginalized women;
  • Proven experience in crisis management and de-escalation techniques;
  • Knowledge of social housing and shelter system in Hamilton;
  • Experience working in a diverse community or setting;
  • Good knowledge of community resources;
  • Ability to work from a trauma informed practice;
  • Ability to lead with a feminist, anti-racist/anti-oppressive perspective;
  • Bilingual English/French or other languages an asset;
  • Must provide a current Vulnerable sector police check or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain at own cost;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Must be available to work flexible hours and be available for on call hours which may include days, afternoons, evenings, weekends and Statutory Holidays, able to cover weekend shifts based on program needs.
