Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) creates innovative, socially relevant drama as a tool for positive change. Over the last 3 decades, we have worked with over a million community members from marginalized communities across Canada, engaging them in compelling theatrical experiences for social change.


We educate, engage and empower with community-Engaged theatre

Based on Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed and Forum Theatre (FT), our primary mission is bringing together professional artists and community members to engage in an intensive co-creation process to address social justice and equity issues. Our work facilitates "rehearsal for reality" and forges deep connections between communities and the arts.


Making theatre-based learning accessible in schools and communities

We provide free/subsidized programming for schools and communities to experience and engage in Forum Theatre, to create an inclusive space for community dialogue/learning through the arts.


Advocate for Forum Theatre practice

We pioneer the cause for integrating community-engaged theatre in artistic and community engagement practice by provide training and arts education programs for artists, educators, and community practitioners



Job Title:                           Marketing and Communications Coordinator

Reports to:                       General Manager

Compensation:               $18.5 / hour

Job Type:                          Employment contract; Part-time; 25 hours/week

Job Start Date:                January 24, 2021, to January 20, 2022

Notes:                               Possibility of Contract Extension as MCT Staff



MCT is seeking a Marketing and Communications Coordinator with a Performing Arts background to support the strategic marketing and day-to-day promotion activities for Mixed Company Theatre’s community arts projects. Reporting to MCT’s General Manager and in liaison with MCT’s program staff, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator will help develop MCT’s community partnerships, effectively build and maintain MCT’s social media platforms, and support design, creation, and execution of all communications tasks.



  • Graduate Degree in Communications, Marketing, Arts Administration, Theatre or related programs
  • Experience in the theatre and/or performing arts sector (required)


Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Requirements

  • Experience in the theatre and/or performing arts sector (required)
  • Proficient and experienced in executing digital marketing techniques and strategy
  • Proficient in the use of tools such as Canva, MailChimp, Wordpress, HootSuite, video editing software
  • Knowledge of video-editing and photo-editing software
  • Demonstrated experience of creating and editing videos and photos
  • Working knowledge of the Google product suite
  • Proficient in the MS Office Suite of Products (Word and PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of Internet research techniques
  • Experience working with and maintaining Databases
  • Exceptional Communication Skills (Written and Verbal)
  • Exceptional Relationship Building skills
  • Experienced in developing posters, working with illustrations to create engaging digital marketing content and materials


Key Responsibilities

Planning and Strategy

  • Lead MCT’s marketing, communications, and strategy vertical
  • Improve, expand and develop MCT’s long-term Communications/Marketing Strategy Plan including activities, task schedule, and resources required for successful execution of the strategy

Execution of Promotion Plan

  • Create interesting and innovative content for various media including our social media channels, to increase our digital engagement and community following
  • Develop high-quality digital content and design for website and newsletters, as well as marketing materials posters, flyers, theatre programs, and other digital visual content
  • Build MCT’s network by promoting to other businesses/organizations/Adhoc groups with a similar mandate
  • Identify suitable audiences for different projects and develop targeted marketing plans to build audience and participant bases
  • Ensure MCT achieves optimum/target community participation in MCT’s programs and projects and bring in audience members to our public performances and readings
  • Promote MCT’s projects and programs as required to engage artists, facilitators, and other sector professionals
  • Seek media coverage to help promote MCT’s programs including; creating and disseminating press releases, and researching and building new media opportunities (i.e local newspapers, online blogs, freelance journalism, and TV news coverage).
  • Update and maintain content and design of the MCT website/s, YouTube channel, and other online media

Management and Administration

  • Maintain master contact database for outreach activities
  • Coordinate with interns/volunteers assisting in outreach activities
  • Oversee all marketing materials with subcontracted/volunteer designers to create – logos, banners, and flyer layouts; liaison with subcontracted/volunteers for other communication-related work
  • Manage and oversee completion of bookings resulting directly from communications and outreach tasks
