Aunt Leah’s Place is a registered charity that has been helping kids in foster care and teen moms achieve a better future for over 30 years. Aunt Leah’s Place helps prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and mothers in need from losing custody of their children. To support them on their journey to self-sufficiency, we provide housing, education & training, and life skills. Aunt Leah’s has been recognized by Charity Intelligence as one of the Top 10 Impact Charities.
Over the past three years Aunt Leah’s has experienced large growth. Aunt Leah’s operates with over 70 staff and 400 volunteers and a growing number of projects and services. We seek the support and guidance of an experienced Finance Manager to ensure a high level of fiscal organization and accountability.
We are seeking a high-energy individual with a solid background in finance and an entrepreneurial spirit who excels in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment, is passionate about supporting innovative services to support youth and families affected by the foster care system, to join Aunt Leah’s Management Team as the Finance Manager in this newly created full-time regular position. As this is a close-knit team, the ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, show initiative, and work well independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
Reporting directly to the Director of Operations, the Finance Manager will bring strategic expertise and support to the Director of Operations and Finance Committee while aligning the finance department with programming, operational needs, and revenue development. They will lead and implement processes and procedures that resource and support Aunt Leah’s strategic goals and directions. The Finance Manager will provide financial reporting, budget preparation and analysis, and ensure compliance with contractual obligations and internal controls. This position is a hands-on management position, with responsibilities ranging from creation of systems and business processes to strategic decision-making that drive the financial health of the organization and enables us to meet our goals. As a member of the Management Team, they will help to ensure alignment of Aunt Leah’s financial plan with the Aunt Leah’s vision, mission, and core values.
Reports To: Director of Operations
Qualifications & Requirements:
Professional designation (CPA)
Minimum 6-10 years’ experience in a similar role, with at least three of those in a non-profit setting
A degree or diploma in leadership/management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with relevant Finance Management experience in the child and youth care field
Previous experience in the Social Service field in supervision and/or administration.
Relationship Building Skills
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage priorities and workflow
Ability to manage the mental and emotional demands of the work
Ability to integrate multi-faceted information into accessible financial reports
Ability to effectively communicate financial information to audience from non-financial backgrounds
Proven experience leading and/or influencing financial decision making after reviewing and analyzing options
Alignment with the Aunt Leah’s mission, vision, and core values
You are passionate about the Organization’s mission and understand the current and historical context of the child welfare system in relation to colonization.
Flexibility, tolerance for ambiguity and time-driven deadlines, and ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities
Demonstrated success evaluating, developing, and implementing financial controls and systems
Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Office 365, Slack, SharePoint, Outlook, MS Word, Excel) and experience with Sage is an asset
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with exceptional attention to details
A high level of confidentiality, discretion, and diplomacy
Self-starter with strong work ethic and ability to work independently
Familiarity with the non-profit sector and with non-profit funding and funders (especially BC provincial and municipal funders) is a considerable asset
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
Adheres to Aunt Leah’s Code of Ethics
Prepare and maintain the annual programs and organizational budgets and forecasts (approx. $7 million) by working with various program Managers and Management Team throughout the year
Work closely with the Executive Director and Executive Team to ensure financial plan aligns with Aunt Leah’s vision, mission and core values
Participation in Management Team
Lead, supervise, and mentor Finance Team (made up of Bookkeeper and Accounts Payable Clerk)
Review internal control processes and analyze program and operational requirements to improve accounting related procedures and control environment throughout the organization
Maintain computerized accounting system capable of producing detailed and accurate reports for both internal and external stakeholders
Review, prepare, and present monthly and ad hoc reports to Director of Operations and Management Team, Finance Committee and/or Board of Directors
Work with Director of Operations and Management Team to build the financial literacy of Program Managers and Supervisors
Develop and produce accessible and easy-to-understand financial updates to Program Managers’ and Supervisors, when necessary
Chair Finance Committee and ensure the timely preparation of agendas, minutes, and financial reports on a monthly basis
Analyze and review budget variances with Finance Committee, Director of Operations and Management team on a regular basis to identify and implement programming and operational changes and to coordinate any necessary accounting adjustments
Analyze all funding and grant contracts/contributions to ensure complete and accurate implementation of the terms of funding; the appropriate tracking of all eligible expenses; and the accurate and timely preparation of external financial documents required in various funding proposals
Lead the annual external audit
Perform other related duties, as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or the Executive Director that do not affect the nature of the work

Work is generally performed in an office environment and may require flexibility for some remote work and occasional evenings and weekends during peak periods.
The position requires sitting and using a computer.
There is some driving requirement for this role within Metro Vancouver.
This is a full-time permanent position (37.5 hours a week; 7.5 hours a day, generally Monday to Friday)
