POSITION TITLE:  Interim Congregational Pastor (contract renewed every six months)

POTENTIAL START DATE: January 2022

SALARY: $65,000 per annum

 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Our Interim Congregational Pastor plays a significant leadership role in the Mustard Seed Street Church. The ICP is a person of mature faith and deep Christian commitment, working mainly from our Queen St. facility in Victoria BC., who loves the Lord Jesus Christ, His church, His body, and has a passion for serving. The position encompasses responsibilities to The Mustard Seed Street Church congregation related to the spiritual care, community building, guidance, mission, and promotion of the Mustard Seed Street Church and its associated street community. As well, the position includes ongoing relationships and team building with the other aspects of the Mustard Seed including our Food Security Network and Hospitality Departments. Relative to the role, the successful applicant will also assist the Mustard Seed Street Church with the finding of a permanent Congregational Pastor.

The Interim Congregational Pastor sits as a member of the Church Life Committee, and is under the direction of the Senior Pastor/Executive Director

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Ministries and Leadership 

 

  • Teaches / equips congregational members and offers spiritual support  
  • The ability to preach biblically with the Gospel as the center of the sermon 
  • To long for (and seek for) the conversion of others through evangelistic methods and daily life 
  • Promotes and speaks on church membership, discipleship, and leadership   
  • Presents and teaches at other churches as assigned and/or approved by the Senior Pastor 
  • Works with the Mustard Seed Congregation to help identify spiritual giftings
  • Takes part in daily chapel services 
  • May be called to represent MSSC at events, conferences, and within stakeholder groups
  • Helps to oversee the spiritual direction of the MSSC congregation under the leadership of the Senior Pastor/Executive Director, offering input into strategic direction, pastoral selection, program development, and team building  
  • Responsible for developing and managing an already fiscally sound annual congregational budget (in conjunction with the Church Life Committee) 

 

Congregation 

 

  • Provides godly leadership for the spiritual well-being of the congregational church body 
  • Plans, coordinates, organizes, and participates in the preaching (3/4 or 4/5 a month),
  • Teaches MSSC Christian programming, including Bible studies 
  • Provides pastoral care along with nurturing of the congregation 
  • With the pastoral team, leads Alpha and Freedom Sessions, or other such programs as assigned yearly
  • Builds up disciples to compliment the ministries of MSSC 
  • Ensures an already appropriate Sunday music ministry 
  • Works in fellowship with other local pastors
  • Helps other departments as directed
  • Works on teambuilding across MSSC departments, in cooperation with other department heads
  • Ensures an appropriate and consistent children’s church program 
  • Attends pastoral meetings as applicable
  • Attends regular monthly meetings as applicable

 

Characteristics, Abilities & Qualifications  

 

The Interim Congregational Pastor will have a thorough understanding (and compassion for) the Mustard Seed Street Church and its associated communities. S/he will both understand and adhere to the ministry purpose, vision, and mission of MSSC. The ICP will have the ability to minister in a setting of deep need and transition. The incumbent will be a minister in good standing with the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada (CBWC), or is willing to be affirmed by the CBWC, ordained to the gospel ministry of Jesus Christ. The incumbent will have previous experience in church revitalization, with preference given to those with experience working with and/or serving homeless and marginalized populations. An M.Div. (or education and experience equivalent) is recommended for this position.
