End Date: March 31, 2023 with possibility of extension

Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: $58,528 to $79,989 annually

The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) is a provincial not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering healthy citizens, communities and environments and advancing the growth and development of the recreation and parks sector in Alberta. We provide information, programs, services and professional development to communities and our members.


As a key member of the ARPA leadership team, and reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications & Marketing Manager is responsible for building brand awareness for ARPA as well as supporting the growth and strategic objectives of ARPA’s diverse programs, events and initiatives. The Communications & Marketing Manager will be comfortable with overseeing day-to-day marketing activities, as well as long-term strategy and facilitating effective internal and external communications. The Manager will also be responsible for the leadership and supervision of communications staff and volunteers and playing a key role in supporting the culture of the organization.



Reporting to the Executive Director, the Manager will:

  • Develop, coordinate and implement communications and marketing plans to deliver corporate communication strategies.
  • Ensure that the ARPA brand (and brands for all programs administered by ARPA) are aligned with its mission and values and applied and managed effectively both internally and externally.
  • Provide communications advice and counsel to management, staff and volunteers
  • Research, write and oversee a wide variety of communications and publicity including newsletters, news releases, brochures, speeches, videos, displays and annual reports.
  • Oversee and retain responsibility for all social media platforms, including developing and executing growth strategies, content creation and development, and organizing and executing social media campaigns while ensuring alignment with overall marketing campaigns
  • Manage media outreach including assisting with media relations, building media networks and partnership opportunities.
  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of communication campaigns and activities in meeting the Association objectives.
  • Represent the Association on internal and external committees as required.
  • Prepare and train ARPA volunteers and staff to act as spokespersons and to act as the ARPA spokesperson as required.
  • Oversee design, printing and production of all communication materials to ensure corporate consistency.
  • Set up, maintain and report on related budget accounts.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, correspondences, and other materials related to work.
  • Responsibility to maintain, review and enhance communication tools such as Association website, databases and other software
  • Provide staff support to Association Committees that require the support of communications
  • Support ARPA and sector advocacy as well as public awareness campaigns and projects by coordinating the work of senior management and external marketing agencies.
  • Support and collaborate with Association staff to support programs, events and initiatives communications and marketing needs and ensure they align with ARPA’s overall brand and guidelines. 
  • Supervise and provide leadership and support to communications staff and volunteers as assigned and available.
  • Represent and promote ARPA at tradeshows, conferences & events as needed
  • Support other organizational activities as required, such as ARPA’s annual conference


Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Post-secondary degree in a relevant field such as communications, marketing, journalism, health marketing, or similar. Master’s degree would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years related and progressive experience in applied communications, preferably with experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Experience in managing multi-platform social media communications
  • Supervisory and project management experience.
  • Active membership in professional associations related to communications and marketing.
  • Dynamic and proactive with ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate promotional, educational and public relations strategies, programs and events.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to develop and implement concepts and themes and research, write, storytell, produce and disseminate a variety of promotional, informational and publicity material.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain reports, presentations, correspondence and other related materials.
  • Ability to manage numerous projects at once and drive each towards realization (meet deadlines).
  • Strong project management skills including creating project timelines, coordinating team efforts and delivering results.
  • Proven experience in managing vendors (designers, printers, ad agencies) in soliciting competitive bids and quality on-time results.
  • Experience with marketing automation, social media platforms, website software and graphic design software / Adobe Photoshop Pro, Wordpress, HootSuite, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and Youtube are desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of Google Analytics.
  • Experience with the management of a large corporate web site.
  • Working knowledge and strong appreciation for visual/conceptual/graphic communications and print production.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for work in the non-profit sector and passion for recreation and parks and improving the quality of life for everyone
  • Experience with communications work using a diversity-based lens. Previous work experience with Indigenous communities or contexts will be considered an asset
  • Knowledge and experience in customer relationship management (CRM) systems is an asset
  • Graphic design skills and experience with design software are an asset
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and independently, with little supervision
  • Double vaccination for COVID will be required as this position will be active at events that will require this vaccination for hosting
  • Ability to accommodate occasional work outside of typical business hours and travel within Alberta
