Summary of Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Club Services, the Youth Engagement Coordinator is responsible for programming, services and administration functions associated with the Best Buy Teen Tech Centre, and the development and implementation of programs for youth 13-18 years old at the Hillside Club. The Youth Engagement Coordinator works collaboratively across the stream to support and advance the role technology can play in educational and social recreation activities for children and youth across the Clubs Stream.
The Youth Engagement Coordinator may also act as the Site Safety Officer for their assigned Club.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Tech Centre.
- Ensures BGC Outcomes of Positive Relationships, Healthy Living, Lifelong Learning and Leadership are met.
- Plans and delivers programs for the Tech Centre that include youth designing their own music, art, newsletters, robots, science simulations, computer games, and animation.
- Supports youth to explore and implement their projects in the Tech Centre.
- Supports youth in planning for the future, including pursuing academic and job opportunities that leverage skills and experience gained.
- Provides basic computer maintenance, including file management, trouble-shooting and technical support to Teen Tech Centre users.
- Supports the recruitment, development and tracking of volunteers in the Tech Centre, including Clubhouse Network, Best Buy Employees, and youth volunteers.
- With the support of the Manager, works collaboratively across the stream to support and advance the role technology can play in educational and social recreation activities for children and youth across the Clubs Stream.
- Promotes the program through outreach to potential participants (including from other BGC Clubs) and networking with schools and community service providers.
- Ensures that the physical, emotional, social, safety, well-being, first aid, and nutritional needs of participants are met within BGC program standards, guidelines, and policies.
- Collaborates with Hillside Coordinator to develop, implement and integrate programs for pre-teens and youth.
- Provides behaviour management techniques and other best practices as outlined in the training segments.
- In collaboration with the Hillside Coordinator, supervises, schedules, and provides orientation to staff and volunteers.
- Ensures that accurate program records, reporting forms, etc. are filled out in a timely manner and always maintained with confidentiality in mind.
- Builds relationships with children, youth, parents, and community members.
- Monitors safe work practices of all staff and participants.
- Works with the Hillside Club Coordinator to carry out safety and emergency procedures.
- Communicates with the Manager and Hillside Club Coordinator on any problems and concerns regarding participants, volunteers, facilities, and programs.
- Works as front-line program staff as needed.
- Ensures that the facility is clean and tidy at the end of each program session and ensures that the facility is locked, and the alarm set at the end of the day.
- Other related duties as required.
- Clean Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector)
- A degree in recreation, social services, child, and youth services, or equivalent (a diploma in recreational programming, child and youth services or community service worker with experience in supervision and program planning).
- One year of experience running programs and engaging with youth and children in a social recreational program setting.
- Experience with and interest in computers and technology such as green screens and 3d printers as a creative and empowering tool. (some training provided).
- Ability to work independently, and effectively with program staff and to form relationships with parents and youth who attend the programs.
- Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills with the ability to problem solve and find resolutions.
- Excellent oral, written, facilitation and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven time and general management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of computer software to generate and exchange information.
- A Class IV license is an asset.
- Valid Standard or Child Care First Aid and CPR certification (must be obtained within 3 months).
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training (must be obtained within 3 months).
- Participates in BGC training.
- Second language and experience working with culturally diverse people are assets.
- This position is based on a 37.5-hour work week. It is recognized that on occasion the Youth Engagement Coordinator may be required to work flexible or additional hours due to the demands of a particular activity or situation. It is expected that the weekly schedule will be adjusted accordingly (time off) to stay within the parameters of the 37.5-hour work week.
This is a full-time position with group benefits at six months, pension after one year, 3 weeks’ vacation, paid sick and personal leave in the first year.
