Position Title: Youth Worker

Location: North Vancouver, BC

Type of Position: Permanent, Part-Time, 20-23 hours per week

Wage Rate: $20/hour to $22/hour gross

Benefits: An extended health benefits package is available following 3 months of consecutive, regular employment and successful completion of a 3-month probationary review.

Vacation: 15 working days prorated for part-time employees

Hours: Monday to Friday, afternoon and evening shifts between 2:30-8:30pm; flexible hours required

Start Date:  February 2022

For 50 years, Capilano Community Services Society (CCSS) has connected residents of the North Shore to their communities by providing support services, resources, and outreach programs that address the current and emerging needs of at-risk youth, and frail and isolated seniors. Our programming is designed to support and enhance social connections, health and well-being, and resiliency. Our goals are to foster vibrant, inclusive and caring communities where residents feel a sense of belonging and can thrive. Our geographical reach covers communities in and around the Capilano area of North Vancouver with programs designed to meet the needs of this population. Of note, early 2022, CCSS will be moving to a brand-new community centre where we will be delivering expanded programs and services for all ages.


Overview of Youth Worker Role


The youth worker will assist the Youth Program Coordinator and Youth Outreach Workers in providing programs and services to youth at the Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre and in the community. This role is based out of the community centre and involves the establishment of positive relationships with youth ages 10-24 years old and the development and implementation of programs and services designed to meet the interest and needs of the same youth and their families.  Independence of judgment and action is required in carrying out the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the work within the limits of established policies, procedures and guidelines. 


The Youth Worker reports to Youth Program Coordinator.



  • In consultation with youth program staff, assists in planning, developing, coordinating a variety of youth programs and events. This includes after school programs, school break activities, out-trips and community events.
  • Provides supervision of youth program participants and actively participates in youth program activities such as: indoor/outdoor games/sports, crafts, cooking, including leadership skills building.
  • Develops relationships of mutual trust, respect, caring and support, and using the available facilities and resources, creates spaces that feel safe, inclusive, and inviting to youth.
  • Recognizes youth who are potentially at-risk and in consultation with program coordinator, assists and refers youth (and families) to resources available in the local community.
  • Encourages and models positive behaviour within the group setting and in public areas.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity, understanding, and respect for program participants and their families and upholds their need for privacy and confidentiality.
  • Set an example of a healthy lifestyle and provide information, guidance and counsel to young people about general life skills.
  • Encourage volunteer participation in youth programs, special projects and events, and assist in establishing a volunteer network of young people.
  • Collect and report information to Youth Program Coordinator about program participation and participant experience.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff, volunteers and management to problem solve and ensure high-quality programming.
  • Assist in preparing promotional materials and methods for youth programs.
  • In collaboration with the Youth Program Coordinator, establish professional development goals and participates in professional development activities.
  • Adhere to and ensure adherence to all relevant policies and procedures related to participant safety, suspicion of child abuse, illness, and accidents.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the employer.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A certificate or diploma in child and youth care or a relevant combination of education.
  • A minimum of 1 year work and/or volunteer experience in child, youth and/or family programming.
  • Experience in group facilitation or teaching is an asset.
  • Experience working with diverse cultural groups including indigenous youth is preferred.
  • Must posses a First Aid certificate and CPR certificate or be able to obtain certification by start of employment.
  • FoodSafe Level 1 Certificate is an asset.
  • BC Driver’s License is an asset


Knowledge, Skills and  Abilities

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and considerable knowledge of small group dynamics, related to youth.
  • Able to recognize and appropriately manage behavioral and social adjustment issues.
  • Must have good listening skills, be adaptable, have excellent problem-solving skills, and be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated awareness, understanding and sensitivity in all issues related to diversity and inclusion, including but not limited cultural humility and identity, financial status, social isolation, learning ability, gender and sexual identity, language and migration status.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and operate within an assigned budget
  • Demonstrate basic computer literacy in standard office software programs and comfort navigating online meeting platforms
  • Ability to speak a second language other than English is an asset.
  • Ability to carry up to 20 lbs and move furniture as required for room set-up/clean-up.

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.
  • A successful criminal record and vulnerable sector check will be required prior to the start of employment.
