♦ Are you interested in supporting inclusive, inquiry-driven, and sustainability-minded education?
♦ Do you yearn for a work environment where you can contribute to a common purpose while feeling supported by a community of colleagues?
♦ Do you enjoy the opportunity to co-create a meaningful role with a blend of responsibilities suited to your skills and passions?
We are seeking organized, compassionate, and creative individuals who enjoy working in a community-minded setting to join our admin team.
Oak and Orca School brings together varied individuals to form a learning community with common values of bioregionalism, consensus, and child-led learning with a view to offering a different kind of educational opportunity to BC students. We enjoy being part of different teams and having a multi-faceted role. We benefit from a supportive employer who provides learning opportunities and mentorship including participation in Pro-D day options (when relevant or of interest) as well as values-oriented training (such as non-violent communication workshops). We receive four weeks of paid time off during the natural breaks in the school year (winter, spring, summer) and additional time off can often be accommodated by request.
Ultimately, our admin team is responsible for performing the wide variety of administrative and clerical duties that facilitate the school’s operation. We get to know families using compassionate communication (in-person, over the phone, and via email), we support students by fulfilling requests for resources and services (including contacting vendors, processing invoices, tracking paperwork), we jointly act as the school’s registrar (monitoring waitlists, offering spots, processing registrations), and we facilitate processes for various school teams. In addition, we have the opportunity to participate in other aspects of the school based on our interests and skills.
We would be especially excited to hear from candidates with any of the following:
A desire to grow in these areas would also be considered, and we are eager to hear what your other passions and interests are (e.g. reading to or sitting with kids at lunch, gardening, proofreading/editing, leading workshops, etc).
We are a unique independent school offering hands-on home-learning to K-12 students across BC as well as an in-person compassionate learning experience to a small group of K-12 students in Victoria. Families choose our school because of our values-based approach to education and because our special education program is highly regarded. All staff at Oak and Orca are expected to model our school philosophies while at work, including ecological and social responsibility and a bioregional lifestyle. When working in person at our school house, this includes a commitment to bike/walk/bus to the school most days.
Our application form asks some key questions that will help us to decide if applicants are a good match for our community. We will contact selected applicants to set up an informal applicant orientation which is the first step in our Interview process. It is an opportunity for us to tell you a bit about what it's like to work at O&O and how our programs work, and for you to ask any questions you might have. We find this initial meeting, while unconventional, is mutually beneficial as it provides a relaxed way to meet and genuinely get to know one another.
A note on location: We prefer candidates located near our school in Victoria, BC so that a mix of virtual and on-site is possible. For the right candidate, remote work from anywhere in BC is a possibility.
