Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator
Start Date: May 16th, 2022
Position Type: Full time, 1-year contract with possibility of extension
Salary: $52,500
Hours: 37.5 hrs/week (Occasional evenings and weekends, flexible hours)
Location: Ottawa/Gatineau (office located in Ottawa, hybrid work model is an option, must be willing to travel within the Ottawa River watershed)

The role
Ottawa Riverkeeper is seeking a highly organized, energetic, and community-driven individual to coordinate our public engagement activities and volunteers throughout the watershed. The ideal candidate is interested in water protection; is keen to connect with people from diverse backgrounds; develops creative ways to share information with the public; and networks, collaborates, and builds strong relationships with community organizations and volunteers. The position will largely be based in the National Capital Region but will also involve activities across the watershed (virtually and in person), necessitating excellent communications skills in both French and English, some travel, and the need for flexible work hours.
This position reports to the Director, River School & Youth Leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate Outreach and Events:
Develop innovative, engaging, thoughtful, and inclusive outreach activities for diverse audiences
Network, collaborate, and build strong relationships with community organizations, Indigenous rights holders, and other collaborative partners
Liaise and collaborate with all departments to identify opportunities for outreach in the community, coordinate schedules, and ensure that activities are delivered professionally and in a timely manner
Coordinate the intake of requests for events such as shoreline cleanups, fairs, festivals, presentations, and workshops (in-person and virtual)
Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, including community events, workshops, presentations, and other communication opportunities.
Develop communication materials for social media to promote events, recruit volunteers, and share engaging content
Ensure that outreach activities follow public health and safety guidelines, reflect sustainability principles, and advance commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion
Track data pertaining to project activities and deliverables, and promote the www.iCleanup.ca app
Manage budget for outreach activities and supervise related staff and volunteers
Volunteer oversight and communication:
Lead Ottawa Riverkeeper’s approach to a positive and rewarding volunteer engagement cycle
Generate and manage content for volunteer communications
Recruit, train, mobilize, and celebrate the incredible volunteers that support our initiatives
Ensure staff at Ottawa Riverkeeper who manage volunteers are equipped to support them throughout the full volunteer engagement cycle
What you Bring
Strong social and collaboration skills to liaise with diverse audiences and communities
Preferred experience of 3-5 years within non-profit community outreach, volunteer engagement, or similar activities
Professional experience working bilingually in English and French (oral and written)
Experience and knowledge of Indigenous history and reality, especially the Algonquin-Anishinabeg Nations within the watershed, is considered an asset
Outstanding written communication and presentation skills
Friendly, enthusiastic, and positive attitude
Strong knowledge of social media and other basic marketing platforms
Familiarity with Google Suite, Customer Relationship Management systems (CRMs), and collaboration software considered an asset
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively under numerous deadlines
Driver’s license and access to a vehicle considered an asset
