Accountant (Contract Position)

Aunt Leah's Place is a Canadian Registered Charity whose mandate is to help prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and mothers in need from losing custody of their children. 

We work proactively at the 'entry' and 'exit' points of the foster care system, helping low-income families maintain custody of their children and for foster youth readying to 'age out' with supports similar to what modern parents do for their own adult children in transition.

We are currently looking to fill our part-time (up to 60 hours per month) Accountant Contract position to begin in May 2022. 

Contract Responsibilities:

• Work proactively with the Executive Director with financial planning, forecasting, strategic planning and performance analysis
• Meet monthly with the Director of Operations and Executive Director to review monthly financial reporting
• Cash Flow planning and special reporting
• Month-end journal entries
• Month-end financial statement preparation with detailed supporting schedules
• Work with the Director of Operations to expand and develop internal controls and processes
• Oversee all the audit, internal controls and be the primary point person with the audit team
• Reconcile accounts and provide financial statements
• Streamline accounting systems and report writing
• Prepare budgets and reports with quarterly reporting within deadlines
• Board meeting preparation and possible attendance
• Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and annual audit
• Provide relevant training to Finance/Accounting personnel and Aunt Leah’s Board as needed

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Accounting designation (Chartered Professional Accountant)
• Proficient with Sage accounting software and Excel GL
• Ability to reconcile accounts and generate financial statements
• Nonprofit experience and understanding around capacity issues that affect the nonprofit sector
• Detail-oriented
• Good oral and written skills
• Good problem-solving ability
• Self-starter
• Energetic
• Deadline driven

• You are passionate about the Society’s mission and understand the current and historical context of the child welfare system in relation to colonization.

Work Environment:

• Work can be done remotely with some in-office work as needed.
• Approximately 12-month contract
