Position Summary:

Toronto Wildlife Centre (TWC) promotes the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife by providing education and expert advice about wildlife situations, and providing medical care to sick, injured and orphaned wild animals with the ultimate goal of releasing healthy animals back into the wild. Currently we help over 5,000 wildlife patients each year, treating over 270 different species including everything from the rare and provincially protected like Peregrine Falcons and Blanding’s Turtles to the more common species seen regularly in Ontario’s parks and neighbourhoods like Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Eastern Chipmunks. The Centre is operated by a core group of highly skilled and dedicated staff and hundreds of volunteers serving many needs, from caring for our wild patients to buying the yummy and healthy groceries essential for healing and growth. As a registered charity, TWC depends primarily on the financial support of individual donors and foundations, many of which have been doing so for over 25 years.


As a General Support staff member, your main role will be to assist the departments and facility manager in maintaining the building and housekeeping standards. This position is a crucial part of the Centre’s operation as it’s geared towards making this very busy Centre functional for every department. You will be assisting with various tasks related to cleaning, light property maintenance, and general housekeeping.



  • Maintain a positive, professional, and safe working environment at all times
  • Ownership over cleaning TWC’s Downsview Park facility e.g. sweeping and mopping floors, removing garbage and recycling, cleaning washrooms, vacuuming, dusting, and other cleaning duties as necessary
  • Provide supportive cleaning for wildlife rehabilitation team e.g. cleaning empty cages, doing laundry, and all other related tasks
  • Inventory of cleaning supplies
  • Maintain grounds and outdoor rehabilitation area e.g. removing litter, clearing snow from walkways, etc.
  • Assist in the upkeep and maintenance of all related equipment and tools e.g. washers and dryers, hoses, disinfectant dispensers, sinks and other related equipment
  • Provide assistance with cage repair and maintenance
  • Provide some oversight of General Support Volunteers
  • Assist with minor renovation work as needed e.g. painting and minor repairs
  • Assist Wildlife Care Supervisors in training seasonal staff, interns, co-op students and volunteers on tasks related to General Support Staff responsibilities
  • Other related tasks as needed

Job Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates an interest in wildlife or the environment an asset
  • Sensitive to the special needs of wild animals in captivity


  • Previous experience cleaning and maintaining a similar sized/type of facility preferred
  • Experience with painting and minor carpentry/renovation work an asset


  • Excellent ability to follow instructions and protocols and work without direct supervision
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with a variety of people
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform repetitive and strenuous tasks such as lifting, bending, stooping, pushing and other moderately strenuous
  • Reasonable physical strength


Working Conditions:

  • Some evenings and weekends are required
  • Must be prepared to work in all weather conditions (some work is outdoors)
