Position Title:      Facility Maintenance Worker

Location:              YMCA Camp Elphinstone (Gibsons, Sunshine Coast)

Terms:                   Seasonal Term, Full-Time

                             Summer contracts may be available; candidates available through October or further preferred

Hours of Work:   35 hours per week

                             Flexibility and availability for varying shifts, including weekends, is required

Start Date:           As soon as possible

End Date:            Full-Time through October 2022, opportunity for Part-Time until the following season

Rate:                    $28.00 per hour

Reports To:          Director, Camp Operations & Maintenance Sea to Sky YMCA

Situation:

YMCA Camp Elphinstone is located near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, a 40-minute ferry ride from Vancouver. It is situated on 144 acres of temperate rainforest along the shores of Howe Sound. During July and August, Camp Elphinstone offers programs for youth ages 5-17, including one and two week overnight camps, sailing camp, Leadership Development, out-trips to Desolation Sound and the Sunshine Coast Trail, and day camps.

From September to June, Camp Elphinstone operates as an Outdoor Education, Event and Retreat Centre for schools, conferences, weddings, and other special interest groups. Camp Elphinstone currently serves over 12,000 participants annually.

YMCA Camp Elphinstone has accommodation and dining for up to 472 people, offering programs like swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, stand up paddleboarding, low/high ropes, rock climbing, wilderness and environmental programs, archery, crafts and more. Camp Elphinstone employs approximately 140 staff/volunteers during July and August, with a team between 20-50 for the spring and fall Outdoor Education seasons, and a smaller core team of 10 staff during the winter season. Successful Camp Elphinstone staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting.

This position is contingent on programs being operational based on public health guidelines and any other relevant factors.

Nature and Scope:

The Facility Maintenance Worker is an integral part to ensuring camp grounds and buildings are kept in a safe and good working order for staff and visitors.

Operations & Maintenance staff at Camp Elphinstone oversee and carry out all aspects of the general upkeep and maintenance for the camp. This includes but is not limited to vehicle maintenance, landscaping, and building maintenance. The position requires someone who is flexible, a creative problem solver, and a team player. 

Major Responsibilities:

• Perform general maintenance duties necessary to keep camp facilities in a safe, and good working order
  • Duties include minor carpentry, drywall, painting, pressure washing, and changing light bulbs
• Perform General landscaping duties including lawn-mowing, hedge trimming, and trail clearing
• Provide coverage for Operations and Maintenance Director as required
• Supports the coordination and to oversee trades contractors performing mechanical, electrical, and civil work on site
• Other duties may be assigned as deemed relevant and required

Skills & Abilities:  

• Demonstrate strong knowledge in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, and Workers’ Compensation Act pertaining to the safety requirements for using power tools, ladders, and maintenance workshops
• Demonstrate experience in the following areas: carpentry, drywall, painting, landscaping, and pressure washing.
• Experience operating grounds and landscaping equipment and machinery relevant to the position
• Experience in managing trades contractors, and the ability to relay clear direction to them
• Ability to safely use and maintain a variety of small power tools
• Be able to move (lift, push, pull, and carry) up to 50lbs
• Able to be on your feet for multiple hours a day
• Familiarity with general building and grounds mechanical equipment
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Experience working in a camp environment preferred

Qualifications: 

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in building / facilities operations and maintenance
• Standard/Emergency First Aid with CPR-C is an asset
• 3 reference checks
• Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
• The YMCA has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy requiring all staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated, as per the timeline set out by the province
