Job Title:    Specialist, Assistive Technology     

Term:          1 Year Contract (35 hours per week)                

Location:     Winnipeg MB

Salary:        $25.54/ h      

Closing Date: May 20, 2022

Summary:

In this role the Specialist, Assistive Technology responsibilities will be to assess, recommend, demonstrate, and provide instruction in assistive technology hardware and software for individuals with vision loss.  This Specialist also participates in education and awareness activities. 

Your impact at VLRC:

• Assess individuals with vision loss and help them identify their personal needs and requirements as it relates to assistive technology solutions.
• In consultation with the individual, makes recommendations on assistive technology and training solutions to meet their unique needs.
• Assist individuals with a plan for the implementation of the assistive technology recommendations, including acquisition, setup and configuration, and training of the assistive device
• Provide support and consultation to individuals and their families re adjustment to vision loss.
• Deliver public speaking seminars and workshops on assistive technology and related topics to community agencies/groups and others.  Demonstrates assistive technology options and solutions to both internal and external audiences.

• Promotes an understanding and awareness of assistive technology and related issues through consultation, public education and in-service training. Perform administrative duties, including but not limited to, service tracking, benchmarking, report writing, etc.

Who you are: 

• You have knowledge and experience working with individuals, of all ages, with vision loss.
• You have basic understanding of the principles of low vision and the impact of visual demands when transferred to electronic visual displays.
• You have a general understanding of other disabilities and how this affects assistive technology selection and instruction.
• You have knowledge of assistive technology.
• You have strong interpersonal and communications skills.
• You are self-directed, organized and detail oriented.
• You demonstrate client centred approach and commitment.
• You have related work experience.

We want to hear from you if you have:

• College diploma or university degree in technology.
• Courses or certificate in teaching and training.
• Extensive knowledge of assistive technology.
• Good command of relevant computer applications.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Willingness to work flexible hours.
• Willingness to travel overnight.
• Ability to lift/carry items up to 15 kilograms

Work Environment:

• Service will be provided in local office, individual homes and/or the community.
