The Role

Reporting to the Supervisor, Humane Education, the Camp Counsellor is member of the Humane Education team who engage youth through presentations and activities, building lifelong compassion and empathy for companion animals during summer day camp programming. Camp counsellor should strive to create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all individuals involved in the camps.

EHS connects people and companion animals through advocacy, education and community engagement and the work of Humane Education directly supports this mission.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of duties as follows:

Camp Supervision and Education

• Supervise and lead activities for up to 20 children (10 kids per counsellor)
• Deliver high quality and inclusive programs
• Ensure the safety of participants, including adherence to any applicable COVID-19 restrictions and regulations
• Monitor for proper interaction and handling of companion animals during activities
• Adapt and respond to children’s behavior, as modify as needed
• Represent EHS in a friendly, professional manner when interacting with parents/guardians and guests
• Ensure all children are signed in and out from camp each day, following set procedures
• Participate in mandatory pre-camp training and weekly planning and evaluation of activities
• Represent Humane Education for other related programming/events as assigned

Prepare & Maintain Education Space

• Prepare supplies and activity set up
• Clean and maintain the education classroom and learning annex space
• Monitor inventory and notify Supervisor if supplies are low

Education & Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 18 years old
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in a customer facing role; experience in recreation, childcare, camp, or an education setting is preferred
• Minimum 1-year experience working with children in a group setting
• Comfort and prior experience in handling and caring for cats, dogs, and small animals
• Current Standard First Aid with CPR (level C) or equivalent is required
• Successful candidates must provide current Police Security Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
• Knowledge of High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development is an asset
• Knowledge of companion animal care/welfare is an asset

Skills & Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you will have a passion for children and animals.  You have excellent communication skills and enjoy working independently with little supervision. You have ability to use positive techniques to ensure positive behaviours.

In addition, you possess the ability to lead, organize and supervise timed programs effectively while responsible for multiple tasks, have demonstrated ability leading and organizing recreation and/or children’s activities, and to create a respectful, inclusive, welcoming environment.  You have a keen attention to detail with the ability to identify and minimize risks, and adjust programming accordingly.

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation.

Hours: 40 hours a week – either 8:00 am to 4:00 pm or 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (to be determined based on camp registration and team schedules).
