The Role

Reporting to Team Lead, Medical Programs  the Veterinary Medical Assistant (VMA) provides care for shelter animals in both a medical and surgical setting. Shelter VMA’s play a key role in ensuring a high level of care and humane treatment is provided to all animals in shelter through tasks such as daily rounds and enrichment support.


Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Treatment - Assist Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) and Veterinarian with examination and treatment of shelter animals
  • Welfare - Perform Daily Welfare rounds
  • Intake Process- Support intake process of all shelter animals
  • Enrichment- Provide enrichment support for animals with special needs
  • Bio-security- Maintain shelter bio-security through routine cleaning/disinfection
  • Spay/Neuter procedures- Assist with High Volume/High Quality Spay/Neuter procedures

Education and Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Veterinary Medical Assistant Certificate
  • Experience with animals in medical practices and procedures
  • Experience working with computer software

Skills and Abilities

As an ideal candidate, you will have knowledge of companion animals, including exotic species. You have the ability to work both independently and within a team and demonstrate an ability to work well in stressful situations and adapt accordingly.
