Who We Are: 

We are a non-profit educational and spiritual retreat centre dedicated to teaching the core principles of yoga which embody peace, resilience, and belonging. Founded in 1981 by venerated master yogi Baba Hari Dass from India — the Centre is the west coast of Canada’s longest running spiritual and wellness retreat centre. Many people experience transformation while being a part of the pristine Centre land nestled in the heart of Salt Spring Island. The YSSI Coordinator will be working alongside people who are committed to exploring community, spiritual practice, and selfless service.  

 

Who We’re Looking For: 

The ideal YSSI Coordinator is a friendly, compassionate and organized yogi who has demonstrated experience with program development, mentorship, and facilitation. We’re looking for someone who has their own, holistic yoga practice and who is excited to teach, mentor, and guide the students. Program Description: 

With support from the Program Manager, the YSSI Coordinator is responsible for the overall planning  and management of the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga’s Yoga Study and Service Immersion Program. The YSSI Program has been running at the Centre since 2014 and has graduated many yogis who have had transformational experiences. The YSSI Program is a 10-week program that serves 3 different cohorts of 12-15 participants.  The plan for 2022 is to have 2, 12 person cohorts. 

The program allows participants to receive foundational teachings in 8-limbed yoga, engage in various spiritual practices and build community within their cohort, advance their personal development, and serve in meaningful karma-yoga roles across various functional areas of the Centre.

Key Responsibilities: 

Program Coordination 

  • Set up the program schedule, ensuring program schedule balances classes and participant learning with karma yoga service needs in functional areas and free time
  • Engage and schedule volunteer teachers and ensure YSSI classes are consistent, engaging and aligned with curriculum
  • Establish mentor relationships between YSSI participants and volunteer mentors
  • Ensure program is running smoothly, meeting learning objectives and iterate as needed as the season progresses 

Participant Recruitment and Engagement 

  • Working with other leaders in the program, oversee recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of YSSI Program participants
  • Work with Retreat Guru software to track YSSI participants information
  • Working with the Program Manager, oversee the YSSI program evaluation
  • Work with Retreat Guru software to track YSSI participants information 
  • Ensure participants are engaged and supported throughout the duration of the program
  • Work with functional area leads to ensure karma service is being delivered effectively
  • Work closely with YSSI program participants - providing support, encouragement, and check ins on an as needed basis as well as formally 
  • Lead daily and weekly circles where participants can build meaningful relationships, have a sense of belonging and community, and process program learnings and takeaways 
  • Working with other leaders in the program, oversee the YSSI program evaluation

Scheduling and Logistics

  • Work closely with functional area Coordinators (Farm, Housekeeping, Kitchen, Landscaping) to ensure participants are able to fulfill their service duties while balancing attendance at YSSI classes and program components
  • Scheduling of volunteers and teachers who play a part in program curriculum and class facilitation
  • Ongoing support ensuring mentors and students are connecting regularly 
  • Help area coordinators to troubleshoot area needs and program conflicts in peak times

General Centre Care and Stewardship 

  • All staff may share responsibility for dishwashing and cleaning during high times. 
  • All staff participate in work parties that provide overall care for the Centre seasonally. 
  • All staff are expected to invest in the Centre’s general care – we prioritize providing a positive  guest and community experience in the spirit of yoga. 

Job Details: 

Working Conditions: 

  • Approximately 37.5 hours per week 
  • Work rhythm is seasonal in nature and hours more than 37.5 a week may be required during  peak times  
  • Work must take place in-person at the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga

Requirements:

  • Clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Driver’s License an asset

Compensation: 

  • $3,000/month, seasonal contract March-October 2022  
  • There may be an opportunity for year-round employment after this seasonal pilot project

Residential Position Available and Recommended

The YSSI Program is a 24/7, 10-week program, with all program participants living onsite. The Coordinator role being onsite not only offers affordable housing on Salt Spring Island for the duration of your time in the role, but also allows you to engage more meaningfully in the program.  If you are excited about the idea of joining our multigenerational residential community, please indicate this in your application. We have limited spaces available for those looking to live onsite in the yoga community.  Those who join our residential community are asked to: commit to engaging with others in a positive  way, keep a clean and sober environment (no alcohol or drugs on the property), and abide by the lacto vegetarian guidelines while on property.
