Job Summary: The Trusteeship Worker is responsible for providing financial support and assistance for youth within the Trusteeship Program. The Trusteeship Worker works with financial institutions, employment support, income assistance, employers, banks, and creditors to ensure effective service delivery for youth. The Trusteeship worker will also liaise with other agencies and facilitate workshops and seminars related to financial management and literacy.

Wage/Compensation: $46,000 annual salary, comprehensive group medical insurance plan, Employee and Family Assistance Program, RRSP contribution, three weeks of vacation in the first year and four in the second, generous sick leave, a generous paid holiday schedule, in-house trainings, and professional development opportunities.

Hours of Work:  40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with some flexibility and occasional evening and weekend work.

Location: Phoenix Centre for Youth, (6035 Coburg Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia).

Reports to: Manager, Phoenix Centre for Youth

Screening Requirements: Due to the sensitive nature of our work with youth, this position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, a child abuse register check and proof of education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensure the program delivery is congruent with Phoenix’s mission, vision, and philosophy.
• Work in accordance with Phoenix’s policies, procedures, and framework of practice.
• Work with youth and other Phoenix programs to provide financial support for youth that addresses their current housing status.
• Provide support for a caseload of up to 50 youth within the trusteeship program.
• Facilitation of group workshops and seminars on topics related to financial management, financial literacy and maintain relationships with landlords and property managers within HRM.
• Complete and maintain appropriate financial documentation for youth in the trusteeship program.
• Ensure appropriate payments are made on behalf of youth in the program.
• Work with financial institutions, Employment Support and Income Assistance, employers, banks, creditors, and other financial institutions as required by the program.
• Liaise with other agencies on behalf of youth and programs and participate in community committees, projects, or activities as appropriate.
• Advocate with community agencies to ensure that the needs, barriers, and strengths of youth who are at-risk and or experiencing homeless are addressed.
• May participate in public education presentations as appropriate.
• Complete and maintain records, assessments, daily statistics, and files, and ensure confidentiality is protected.
• Compile statistics and data for the youth accessing the trusteeship program that will assist with the outcomes and evaluation of this initiative.
• Commit to the development of the Association and participate in internal committees, projects, and activities.
• Assist in program and service development to ensure that quality, effective and client-centered programs, and services are delivered.
• Provide a supportive environment and foster a therapeutic milieu that promotes youth empowerment.
• Supervise field placement students as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Demonstrated high level understanding of financial literacy, trusteeship programs and effective money management.
• Demonstrated ability in group facilitation, specifically facilitation of group work with youth.
• Demonstrated high level of understanding of youth development and the issues of homelessness.
• Demonstrated high level of understanding of a housing first model and approach.
• Demonstrated skill using anti-oppressive practice (harm reduction, narrative practice, a client-directed approach, and a social justice perspective).
• Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
• Ability to be primarily self-directed but also to be a cooperative member of the team.
• Demonstrated exceptional level of interpersonal, communication, youth service and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to build appropriate and healthy rapport with at-risk and youth experiencing homelessness.
• Extensive knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system.
• Dedication and openness to continuous learning.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
• Proficiency using QuickBooks is an asset.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Undergraduate degree in social service / Social Work with additional education/training in financial management, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Experience working for a non-profit organization is an asset.
• Registration or Candidacy for Registration, certification, or membership of a related professional body (if applicable).
• A minimum of three years of experience working with at-risk populations and providing case management and advocacy.
• Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI), suicide intervention (ASIST), standard first aid or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired.
• Experience in program development.
