The Toronto Environmental Alliance is hiring a part-time Program Assistant for summer 2022 to help support project-based research and engage communities in Toronto on our key campaigns.


Who We Are

For over 30 years, the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA) has been advocating on behalf of Torontonians for a green, healthy and equitable city. TEA is a registered non-profit that is recognized Canada-wide for our municipal work on climate change, waste and pollution prevention, and other issues that are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. To promote a greener Toronto, TEA works with concerned individuals, workers, grassroots organizations, businesses, professional associations, and elected officials.


The Position:

The Program Assistant will help support multiple TEA project areas including our climate change work, and our work to promote a shift to reusables to reduce waste and single-use foodware in businesses across the city. This support will include business and community outreach as well as administrative and policy research support.


The position will involve a combination of remote work from home, and in-person work for outdoor community outreach, events and meetings. If deemed necessary, there may be some limited work at TEA’s office or our partners’ work sites. All in-person work will be carried out in accordance with public health guidelines, and TEA’s health and safety protocols.


Tasks will include:

  • Assisting the staff team to connect with communities and engage small businesses and residents from Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods and communities in local and city-wide environmental issues
  • Attending community events and festivals to promote TEA’s projects
  • Supporting virtual meetings, workshops and community events with TEA’s partners and community collaborators as needed, e.g. note taking, logistics support.
  • Supporting TEA projects with background research on local environmental concerns, transcribing notes and summarizing content as requested
  • Supporting TEA staff with environmental policy tracking related to  climate change and waste items at City Council
  • Carrying out administrative tasks including data entry and event reporting


  • Strong commitment to environmental justice and anti-oppression
  • Ability to take initiative and carry out tasks independently 
  • Able to work some evenings and weekends (to attend in person and virtual community events and meetings)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team towards specific goals
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal engagement skills 
  • Proficiency in google office and various digital meeting platforms

Any of the following skills/experience will be considered assets:

  • Knowledge of municipal policy issues 
  • Knowledge of zero waste or climate change issues
  • Experience in community mobilizing 

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs. To be eligible, the successful applicant must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; 
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Terms of employment:

Part-time contract: 9 weeks at 30 hours per week

Pay: $19/hour

Start Date: June 6th, 2022 

End date: August 5th, 2022
